They still operate like a dollar tree team. There's some robbing of Peter to pay Paul with their finances, which can and probably has affected how the team is run.
What's that mean when they are a top 5 payroll team this year? They stopped spending for a few seasons due to the Madoff situation which many organizations/individuals got caught up in. Otherwise, they are always top 10 usually top 5 in spending. It's just that a lot of their signings just don't work out, you would be better off attacking their overall baseball competency rather than their spending. Jeff Wilpon is definitely a hinderance to the organization and doesn't know what he is doing or how to manage an organization. I got no problem with Fred other than giving his son too much power which is an understandable blind spot considering his personal connection to Jeff. The Mets problem really is sustaining success, their pattern is:
  1. They stink and are devoid of talent
  2. They hire someone to fix it who initially has a lot of autonomy
  3. They improve the team and the farm system
  4. The MLB team gets better/makes the playoffs to varying success for a year or 2
  5. They then make an ill advised trade or signings that again make the team trend downward (variety of reasons, see below)
  6. Team declines
  7. Back to step one
These steps all occur with an impatient fanbase, a negative media narrative surrounding the team, a meddling son of the owner and the most popular and most valuable franchise is in the same city likely having similar or more success.
These last four constant variables combined apply a lot of pressure to management that make them due hasty things that are errors and a detriment to long-term success.
If they were able to have a hands-off owner and a management team who could more or less ignore the fanbase, media and what the Yankees are doing they would be better. But this is way easier said than done, because the fans/media/Jeff Wilpon/Yankees are always in your face bombarding you with information.
The only variable that will change with Steve Cohen is Jeff is gone. But if you have seen the show Billions and Bobby Axelrod is based off of Cohen he doesn't seem like the type of person to be hands off. So the one variable that would change amongst the negative ones outlined is no more Jeff but there is no guarantee Cohen will be hands off and that's what is needed.

Mets are top 10 in payroll. They are only cheap compared to the Yankees.

If we were a true big money team, we would be on runnings for premier FA's. It's a shame, that we weren't in the running for Harper; Gerrit Cole, or Machado.

But we resigned Cespedes and DeGrom. And stupidly traded for high salary player Cano.
And I really didn't want any parts of Machado or Harper. Especially Harper, I think he has already played his best years of baseball. Cole would be excessive if we plan on keeping Syndegaard in the future. We can't pay 3 guys that much money in our rotation. That's just a bad allocation of $.

If we knew syndergawd would get hurt I would hope they would try to make a run at Cole, but since we didn't see that coming I had no problem with not making a run at him. Degoat, Thor, and stro would have made a strong core. I would what kind of discount we could get from Thor once he recovers.

Missed the game yesterday, I see they won 7-4 in Boaston :ohhh:

3 dingers :ohhh:
Wacha looked servicable last night which is great coming off Porcello's terrible no performance. And yeah Boston had no pitching so Conforto, Dom and Alonso went yard. Alonso despite going yard still is chasing a lot of bad pitches right now. Conforto is hot.
Looking forward to seeing what the rookie SP does tonight. If he is decent I like our prospects this summer if he sucks we not going anywhere cause Porcello is finished.
