Combine Report 3/3: Changing of the Guard?

The first day of workouts for the 2017 NFL Combine is complete. Here’s the most recent buzz around the city of Indianapolis.

From talking with people it seems there’s a changing of the guard, or at least a changing of the guard rankings. Several teams came away very impressed by the workout of Forrest Lamp and now have the Western Kentucky blocker as the top guard in the draft followed by Dan Feeney of Indiana and Dorian Johnson of Pittsburgh. There’s not a big spread amongst the three and if Lamp lands in the late first round expect Feeney and Johnson to come off the board by pick 35. I’m told Lamp could be taken as early as the 20th selection by the Denver Broncos.

Reports from this afternoon stated Desmond King of Iowa will participate in everything at the combine except the forty due to an abdominal strain. I’ve been told that may not be the only reason. King has not been running all that fast in training and there was a concern he would not dip below 4.6 seconds at the combine had he decided to run. I’m not going to challenge the report about the abdominal strain but there has been documented concern about King’s speed and from what I’ve heard from combine training it’s legitimate.

How deep is the running back class? Teams have as many as 15 running backs presently listed on their draft boards as top 100 players. The expectation is ball carriers with third round grades will drop into the fourth and fifth round due to the depth of the position.

Tight end Evan Engram of Mississippi has moved up draft boards since the Senior Bowl and could move up further with a good workout tomorrow. He’s listed as the third rated tight end by a number of teams and a few grade him neck and neck with David Njoku of Miami.

If Dede Westbrook of Oklahoma does not run tomorrow questions will be asked and red flags will be raised. After not accepting an invitation to the Senior Bowl scouts are wondering about his preparation for the draft and the advice he’s receiving.

Speedy Noil of Texas A&M will likely give John Ross a run for his money tomorrow as the fastest receiver at the combine. I’m told the Aggie junior expects to break the 4.3 second barrier and could turn in a vertical jump of 45 inches.

Guard Jordan Morgan is drawing a lot of interest from the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans here at the combine. Teams like his upside and believe he’s a solid developmental prospect.

Speedy Noil is a freak athlete. This has been known for years.

It just sucks he can't do anything with that athleticism on the football field.

Cardinals Plan Intensive Quarterback Scouting

Earlier in the offseason, Arizona Cardinals general manager Steve Keim stated the team had to find the quarterback to follow veteran Carson Palmer. Palmer considered retirement before committing to another season in the desert, but he turns 38 during the 2017 season and has an extensive injury history. Obviously, Keim understands that the Cardinals need to find their quarterback of the future. Sources tell WalterFootball.com that the Cardinals are planning on doing an intensive quarterback evaluation in the lead up to the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Cardinals plan is to narrow down their list to the top five quarterbacks and spend a lot of time with each of them. They plan on holding private workouts with all five of the signal-callers with ownership possibly attending. Their top five quarterbacks aren't set as of yet. However, sources say North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky, Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer, Clemson's Deshaun Watson, and Texas Tech's Pat Mahomes are expected to be in the final five. The other spot could go to Cal's Davis Webb, Miami's Brad Kaaya, or another signal-caller.

Arizona has other needs it will scout hard for early-round picks, but sources say the quarterback search is going to be very intensive and similar to the Eagles' process of digging on Carson Wentz last year. The Cardinals know that finding Palmer's successor is critical, and that is the focus of their 2017 NFL Draft.
Good I'm glad for Cards, objectively, speaking as a Rams fan. Kizer or Mahomes could be a good look for Arizona. I like Arians as a coach but can he help develop a young QB with the help of The Mechanic's favorite QB coach in Byron Leftwich.

The Cards , Steelers and even the Giants and Chargers to a certain degree should've been drafted a QB to the future.shyt the Saints too.

weak draft class.

just watch how all those nikkas fall back to irrelevance once the gawds arrive from the 2017 and 2018 draft classes. they will be historically strong.
Weak draft class that had 2 rookie mvp candidates :mjlol:, rookie running backs that finished 1-2 in rushing, and Bosa had a historic year rushing the passer while missing 4 games. Don't get me started on Mike Thomas who had the best rookie season as a wideout since Moss. #'s don't lie :Wewinning:

nikka I don't know what all that shyt you wrote is. All I know when I saw him play was he could ball.

He's a top 3 edge rusher in this class with Myles Garrett and Derek Rivers.
He's not a good edge rusher. He can barely bend his hips. Stop it. If u want to call him a decent all around defensive end then thats fine.

He's not running in the 4.3's. Noil was the biggest bust ever

Taywan Taylor is who I'm watching in the WR group tmo. He is high on a lot of teams lists. He should run in the 4.3's and have a 40 inch vert and crazy broad jump too

That cause the rest of the league is also weak.

Sorta like how Steph Curry won back to back MVPs and the Warriors won a ring thanks to a weak NBA.

NFL has been got garbage for a while now.

Expect the 2017 and 2018 to give it a much needed infusion of talent. Once those kids enter the league the 2016 kids will go to the background.

Speedy Noil ran a 4.3 and jumped 42+ inches at the Nike Opening as a high school junior.

I think he can replicate those numbers. Sure they were probably inflated at the time. But he's also 4 years older now.

Mayock is a Philly guy, so forgive him for this, but he thinks the hidden gem in the edge class and maybe the draft is a guy from his ’hood (Villanova). The son of a chemist from Uganda and economist from Ivory Coast, rusher Tanoh Kpassagnon (repeat after me: TAWN-o pass-N-yoh) had 21 tackles for loss at the I-AA level last year. “He has no idea what he’s doing,” said Mayock, “but he was really good at the Senior Bowl, and it’ll be interesting to see what he runs. Lots of teams love him.” Look for him to go in the late-second-round range.

Mike Mayock on board with me, this kid about to show out tomorrow.
