The DA Draft Buzz: February 21st

How many offensive guards could be selected during the draft’s first round? It could be more than anyone expects. Most teams across the league believe the offensive line as a unit is probably the weakest area of the draft from both a quality and quantity perspective. As a result, some of the higher-rated prospects and even those in the middle rounds will be overdrafted. Though final boards have yet to be assembled, there is a belief that two or possibly even three guards could end up in Round 1.

Similar to many teams, Dorian Johnson of Pittsburgh presently grades as our top-ranked guard. Dan Feeney is not far behind in my opinion, and several teams list the Indiana product as the top guard in the draft. As it stands now, both have the distinct possibility of being selected during the first round.

If there is a third guard selected at the end of Round 1 or the opening stages of Round 2, it’s going to be Forrest Lamp of Western Kentucky. Two weeks ago I heard murmurings of Lamp landing late in the first round but refused to believe it. Yet over the course of this evening, two insiders tell me they also think it’s also a possibility that Lamp, who played left tackle for the Hilltoppers but is projected to guard by most while others see him as a center, could slide into the final picks of Round 1.

The poor crop of offensive lineman in the draft will also impact free agency. More on that next week.

D'Onta Foreman of Texas has been running swift times during combine training. The big back has tipped the scales around 235 pounds and is clocking in the low-to-mid 4.5s in the forty, an exceptional time. I mentioned Foreman in yesterday’s version of Monday Musings. Besides being a powerful downhill ball carrier, I believe his pass-catching skills out of the backfield are underrated.

Staying on the theme of running faster than expected, keep an eye on Central Florida cornerback Shaquill Griffin during the final day of the combine. He’s been training at the Michael Johnson facility in preparation for his combine workout, and I’m told the trainers believe Griffin is ready to run “an elite time,” which means under 4.35. I’m glad Griffin is getting an opportunity on the big stage of the combine. I first noticed him as a sophomore when UCF traveled to Missouri and lost to the Tigers. Even then it was obvious Griffin offered next-level potential.

2017 NFL Draft Stock - Pre-Combine II

2017 NFL Draft Stock Up

Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson
In the Senior Bowl rumor mill, we discussed the "Dak Prescott effect" that will help Watson's draft stock in the leadup to the 2017 NFL Draft. After NFL teams started draft meetings last week, multiple teams told WalterFootball.com that Watson's rise has already begun even though scouts across the league didn't grade him as a first-round pick. WalterFootball.com knows some teams that have Watson as the second-rated quarterback for the 2017 NFL Draft behind only North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky. Watson looks safe to go in Round 2, but his rise could push him into the first round because of the need at the position. One quarterback-needy team owning a the top-16 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft told WalterFootball.com that they wouldn't take Watson with their first-round pick because it is too big of a reach, but they would consider trading back into the first round to get him if their quarterback need persists after free agency. Watson could easily end up being like Teddy Bridgewater as a late first-round pick.

Mitch Trubisky, QB, North Carolina
Across the league, Trubisky has graded out as the top-rated quarterback. Some scouts like other individual signal-callers more and say that Trubisky doesn't wow them with his skill set. However, Trubisky seems to be the quarterback with the least amount of flaws in the consensus opinion. Multiple teams think Trubisky will be the first quarterback off the board and will go in as a top-10 pick. Trubisky lacks experience, but that shouldn't prevent him from being a high pick come the 2017 NFL Draft.

Haason Reddikk, LB, Temple
Reddikk is a linebacker who helped himself at the Senior Bowl. He was an edge rusher in college, but is too undersized for that role in the NFL. In Mobile, Reddikk flashed the ability to move off the line and play a more traditional outside linebacker role for the next level. Teams feel that Reddikk's lack of experience makes him a significant developmental project for the NFL, but they believe he will end up being a second-day pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Caleb Brantley, DT, Florida
Brantley has been given first-round grades by teams and could be one of the few interior defensive linemen to get selected in the first round. After Jonathan Allen goes off the board, and one would think that would be very quickly, Brantley will be the next interior disruptor who teams target. Sources are impressed with his pass rush and ability to cause havoc in the backfield. Brantley could end up going higher than expected.

Gareon Conley, CB, Ohio State
Conley is one of the many talented cornerbacks in the 2017 NFL Draft. Sources from multiple teams tell WalterFootball.com that they gave Conley a late first-round, early second-round grade for April. Conley graded out higher than some other more hyped cornerbacks like Florida's Quincy Wilson, Michigan's Jourdan Lewis and Iowa's Desmond King. With his well-rounded game and quality skill set, Conley has a real chance to be a Thursday night selection.

Montae Nicholson, S, Michigan State
Michigan State had a down 2016 season, which is playing into Nicholson going under the radar. He was a surprise early entry into the 2017 NFL Draft, but WalterFootball.com knows some team sources that really like Nicholson and are thinking of him as a candidate for Day 2 of the 2017 NFL Draft. Teams love Nicholson's skill set with good size at 6-foot-2, 219 pounds and speed to cover a lot of ground. He could rise if he puts together strong showings at the combine and in predraft-visit workouts.

John Ross, WR, Washington
There isn't a lot of media buzz about Ross, because more attention has been paid to wide receivers like Clemson's Mike Williams and Western Michigan's Corey Davis. Teams across the league expect Williams to be a top-20 pick, and some teams gave Davis second-round grades and expect him to go late Round 1. Multiple teams have told me that Ross has been given late first-round grades and they believe that he will go in the 20s. That would be fitting with other speed receivers in recent years like Will Fuller, Brandin Cooks and Kendall Wright. According to multiple teams, they believe that Ross could go ahead of Davis.

2017 NFL Draft Stock Down

Quincy Wilson, CB, Florida
This is a loaded cornerback draft, and in speaking to teams, it sounds like Wilson may have made a mistake in skipping his senior season. Wilson has a good skill set, but sources from multiple teams feel that Wilson is limited to being a press-man corner. That, along with some other concerns, has multiple teams grading Wilson as a second-round pick. Considering there are a lot of potential first-round corners, Wilson could slip to Friday night of the 2017 NFL Draft. If he would have returned for his senior year, improved, and then was in a weaker cornerback draft, Wilson could have had a better chance of being a first-round pick.

DeShone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame
Kizer makes this list two weeks in a row. Last week, teams across the NFL were having draft meetings in preparation for the NFL Scouting Combine. And I've talked to numerous teams across the league since then, yet I haven't found a team that loves Kizer. In fact, the team that likes him the most drafted a franchise quarterback in recent years and isn't in the market for a quarterback. There are a lot of lukewarm feelings on Kizer across the league. That could lead to him sliding significantly in the 2017 NFL Draft. Athletically, Kizer has the best skill set of any quarterback prospect in the 2017 NFL Draft, but he struggled with consistency in his final season of college football. Lately, NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah and Charley Casserly haven't even had Kizer in the first round of their mock drafts. Notre Dame had a rough season, and Kizer received his share of blame for that. Team sources say that Kizer is a good kid but his interviews will be big for him to answer questions on his leadership, accountability, and football I.Q.

Cam Robinson, OT, Alabama
In surveying six teams across the league, I found an even split among teams that thought Robinson would go slide in the draft or that he would go high. The teams that said believe Robinson will slide cited Robinson's inconsistencies from his junior season. Some team sources believe that the interviews, medical evaluation, and off-the-field concerns could push Robinson down. He did have a gun arrest roughly a year ago, but the charges were eventually dropped. One general manager of a playoff team said they liked Wisconsin's Ryan Ramczyk and Utah's Garett Bolles more than Robinson. Three other teams, however, thought Robinson would go high. One team picking in the early teens didn't believe Robinson would get to their pick. One playoff team was hoping Robinson would slide, but didn't think it would happen. Still with a split across the league on Robinson's value, a draft-day slide is possible. It also is possible that Ramczyk or Bolles gets drafted ahead of him.

Corey Davis Unlikely to Perform at Combine

The NFL Scouting Combine is just days away, and NFL teams have put together a list of players who are unlikely perform at the combine because of injury. Some of those players were already known. Weeks ago, we were first to report that Ohio State safety Malik Hooker would be out after having labrum and hernia surgery. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Florida linebacker Jarrad Davis is out with an ankle injury, while ESPN's Adam Caplan reported Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster was out after surgery on his right shoulder.

WalterFootball.com has learned from team sources that another first-round talent who is unlikey to perform at the combine is Western Michigan wide receiver Corey Davis.

A shoulder injury led to Davis not participating at the Senior Bowl, and teams have been told he is unlikely to work out at the combine. There are a lot of questions in the scouting community about how fast Davis will run in the 40-yard dash, but that answer will probably have to wait until his pro day.

Here is the group of players that team sources passed along to WalterFootball.com on their unlikely-to-perform list:

Western Michigan wide receiver Corey Davis
Wisconsin left tackle Ryan Ramcyzk
Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster
Ohio State safety Malik Hooker
Florida linebacker Jarrad Davis

The list passed along also included three players who were said to be questionable to participate:

Michigan tight end Jake Butt
LSU linebacker Kendell Beckwith
Baylor quarterback Seth Russell.

Monday Mussings: February 27th

The final pre-combine edition of Monday Mussings looks at the first half of the PAC 12, the conference that will have a major impact on April’s draft.

Sun Devils placekicker Zane Gonzalez was the only player from Arizona State or Arizona to receive an invitation to the combine. He’s likely to be the only player from either of those schools who will be selected in the draft.

Linebacker Paul Magloire and receiver Trey Griffey will quickly sign as free agents once the draft is complete. The duo played well during the week of practice for the Shrine Game and have an outside chance of sliding into the seventh round if the run well during pro-day.

Several reports from Rotoworld last week spoke of Cal’s Davis Webb being a top five quarterback in the draft. It should not come as a surprise as Davis presently rates as the fourth signal caller on our board, just ahead of Patrick Mahomes. Webb is a nice sized passer who throws tight spirals which quickly get to the intended target. He’s relatively accurate and does a solid job spreading the ball around. In time Webb could develop into a Sunday starter but needs to improve his throwing fundamentals and consistently deliver the ball with proper footwork. If he accomplishes this it will only enhance his accuracy.

The other highly rated Cal prospect, and a player we grade as a second day pick, is Webb’s favorite target Chad Hansen. I would argue Hansen’s pass catching skills are on a par with any of the top receivers in this draft and he snatches absolutely everything thrown in his direction. Hansen regularly makes the acrobatic reception with defenders are draped on his back while consistently coming away with easy receptions. The difference between Hansen being a top 45 selection and a bottom of round two choice is forty time. On film Hansen does not seem to have the foot speed necessary to separate from defenders and has to battle for most of his receptions.

Colorado has not had a player selected in the past two draft’s but will likely have multiple second day picks this April. I’ve written about Chidobe Awuzie numerous times and believe he’ll be a second round choice. Not far behind is fellow Buff corner Ahkello Witherspoon. Unrated by scouts entering the season, Witherspoon’s ball skills are close to equaling Awuzie’s and he’s taller than his teammate. Fast forty times next week could push him into the initial 75 picks. During the previous five draft’s CU had a combined five players selected. This year alone they are likely to have five players on defense chosen by the time the draft is complete.

My how the mighty have fallen. In the past it took me two days to complete the Oregon film work. This year I was done after a single morning. One year ago I completed eleven individual scouting reports on Duck players and handed three of them draftable grades. This year I’ll be doing five, maybe six reports on this once proud program, and not a single Oregon player grades as draftable on our board.

Contrary to Oregon, there could be several players from interstate rival Oregon State who slide into the late rounds. The two players who intrigue me the most are cornerback Treston DeCoud and receiver Victor Bolden. DeCoud is a big, physical defensive back who may ultimately move inside to safety. Bolden is a vertical threat that also lends a hand returning kicks. Both are underrated, both received combine invitations and in my opinion both will make active rosters in the NFL.

At the time of this writing I’m just beginning the Washington film. The Husky who really stands out is Budda Baker. When I watch the film on Baker my thoughts are, wow, just wow! If there’s a player I would compare him to it’s the All Pro safety who plays just a few minutes from the Washington campus, Earl Thomas of the Seattle Seahawks.

i said this shyt a month ago, some got him going in the 2nd but, it wouldn't shock me if he was the 1st QB taken (top 5-10). dude is made for the combine, there's no way he shouldn't shine and amaze teams with his athletic ability and arm.
I would think some teams are scared due to the Air Raid system, but there long removed from the Leech days . And from what i've seen dude has the tools and intangibles.

If he shows out on the combine and My Bills really going with a QB if Watson isnt there, I wouldnt mind taking Mahomes.
