Senior Bowl Post-Script: Part I

The 2017 Senior Bowl is complete and now its off to the combine. While Senior Bowl players made their way home there was still plenty of talk amongst scouts and the leagues personnel people about last week, including updates on underclassmen. Here’s the latest.

There was plenty of talk centering on prospects from the University of Washington and their three defensive backs; Budda Baker, Sidney Jones and Kevin King. Teams like all three players.

Scouts say Baker is just a terrific football player. They question his speed and tell me despite recent comparisons he's no Earl Thomas. Grades on Baker presently range from second round through the fourth round. Jones is the second rated cornerback on most boards. Scouts love his length and pure cover skills. There is concern about his build (he’s thin) and the fact he’s not a good tackler. How do they feel about the team’s senior cornerback Kevin King? It will all come down to his forty time at the combine. Better than expected times in the forty (low 4.4’s) could push King into the late part of round one. Otherwise expect to hear his name called in the second frame. King’s ball skills compare with many of the top corners but teams fear he will be a liability in the deep field.

Despite the fact he’s likely to measure under 5-feet/10-inches at the combine most I spoke with say Adoree' Jackson of USC is a lock first round pick. They are willing to overlook Jackson’s height as teams have stamped the junior "a difference maker" at cornerback, as a return specialist and even at the receiver position.

The belief is Jackson’s teammate Zach Banner will be over drafted in the fourth round area. Banner measured 6'8 361lbs last Tuesday during Senior Bowl weigh-in and scouts love his size as well as his athleticism but there is also concern Banner does not or cannot bend his knees (something I mentioned on our practice page). Banner may also be medically flagged due to previous issues with his hips.

One west coast player who left a positive impression on scouts was Eddie Vanderdoes of UCLA. The defensive tackle was impressive every day as we noted and has significantly improved his draft grade. Scouts felt they were looking at a healthy Vanderdoes for the first time in a while. Besides the playing skills he showed during Senior Bowl practice they love his length and growth potential. Right now I’m told teams have a third round grade on Vanderdoes.

Watch out for this name: DEREK RIVERS (DE/OLB) - Youngstown State

He showed out at the senior bowl. He'll test really well at the combine. Reminds me of former Chargers OLB Shawne Merriman (when he was on steroids).

Don't be surprised if he sneaks into the 1st round. He's that talented.

Malik Hooker Out 4-6 Months After Two Surgeries

Every year in the NFL Draft, there are some top prospects who are held back by injury during the pre-draft process. This year, one of the top talents in the 2017 NFL Draft will be in that category, as WalterFootball.com has learned from NFL sources that Ohio State safety Malik Hooker will be out 4-6 months after having hernia and labrum surgery.

Given the timetable of his recovery, Hooker won't be able to participate in the field workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine and may not be able to conduct other workouts later in the spring for teams prior to the draft. Thus, sources say that Hooker's combine medical recheck weeks before the draft will be very important for teams to gauge if there could be any projected impact on his availability for the start of training camp.

Hooker was one of the breakout players in college football in 2016, as the redshirt sophomore totaled 74 tackles with 5.5 for a loss, half a sack, four passes broken up and seven interceptions. He returned three of those picks for touchdowns in his first season as a starter. The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder impressed evaluators with his natural skills as a single high safety and his ability to be a game changer in pass coverage. Hooker is atop our NFL Draft Safety Prospect Rankings.

At this time, the injuries don't appear to be threatening to his rookie season, so his draft stock may not see much of an impact from these surgeries. Multiple teams have told WalterFootball.com that Hooker has received high first-round grades, so even with these injuries, he may not have a long wait to find out his NFL home on Thursday night of the draft.

Senior Bowl Post-Script Part II

OJ Howard was the talk of Mobile last week yet a different tight end from the state of Alabama is drawing high praise from scouts. Also- how important are Senior Bowl interviews? Here’s part two of our Senior Bowl post-script.

The universal belief leaving the Senior Bowl had O.J. Howard as the big winner at the tight end position. But a number of teams rated Gerald Everett of South Alabama equal to Howard last week. Everett was impressive both days he participated in practice and though he has a size deficiency compared to other tight ends, teams view him as the truest deep threat and downfield playmaker at the position. There’s a belief Everett could slide into the late part of round one if he performs well at the combine. Right now I’m told he’s the tight end of choice for the New York Giants.

Shrine week star Eric Saubert arrived at the Senior Bowl on Friday and played about 8 snaps during the game the following day. Grades on Saubert presently range between rounds 3-to-5.

Another player who quietly had a big week in Mobile was San Diego State’s Damontae Kazee, who we described as the best cornerback from the South practice. NFL decision makers were impressed with Kazee’s footwork, movement in reverse and secure tackling. While the corner has been stamped as a possible third round pick I’m told teams are concerned about his speed and don’t expect Kazee to run faster than the high 4.5’s at the combine. Sources close to the cornerback tell me he’s been running times of 4.53 electronic and 4.45 hand held in training.

Kareem Hunt of Toledo was another scouts were buzzing about. The ball carrier came in about 20-pounds lighter than his playing weight at 208-pounds. By combine time he expects to be around 213lbs-to-215lbs, the weight he feels is optimal. Hunt met with 25 teams at the Senior Bowl including 10 full franchise interviews with general managers on hand, the New York Jets being one of those interviews. This is an important fact to remember as teams are using the Senior Bowl for expanded interviews so they won’t have to expend one of their allotted interviews at the combine on certain players. Better said; if Kareem Hunt leaves the combine completing just five interviews its due in large part to the ten expanded interviews he completed during Senior Bowl week.

How did Antonio Garcia fare last week? I thought his technique was terrific and Garcia was very effective in full scrimmage as well as team drills. I also thought he looked a little unsure of himself during one-on-one drills and I mentioned this to Garcia when speaking with him after Wednesday’s practice. Scouts wholeheartedly agreed with this assessment and one scout took it a step further commenting Garcia looked like a deer in headlights. The big stage at the Senior Bowl may be the cause and it’s something teams will look for during combine interviews.

On the junior front talk at the Senior Bowl was the expectations of tackle Garrett Bolles being selected much earlier than presently projected. While scouts are concerned about his lower body strength they’ve classified Bolles as the “superior athlete” in this year’s tackle class.

Look at Kizer's arm talent. This nikka is easily the best QB prospect since Jameis. He has an even higher ceiling because he has a better arm and is cat-like on his feet. Unbelievable prospect.

White media hates this so The Coli doesn't talk about him.

He's going #1.

The eyes tell us more than game tape. The nikka is p*ssy like Josh Freeman. He's a bust waiting to happen.

Just look at this picture and tell me you seriously think this p*ssy will be a star QB in the NFL?

Kizer just doesn't have the juice.

These NFL teams are so stupid. Year after year they make stupid decisions.

Last year I called Sterling Shepard over Corey Coleman. While everyone was enamored with the stats at Baylor, I said Shepard was much better and should have been the first receiver off the board. This past season validates my opinion. Shepard showed out as a rookie while Coleman was irrelevant.

This year I'm hitching my wagon to Evan Engram. He's the clear cut best TE in this class. And he's way better than this Everett guy or OJ Howard. Anyone who passes on him for another TE will feel as stupid as all those teams that passed on Sterling Shepard last year for other WRs.

U have never seen any of these guys play besides a handful. U have never seen Everett play a down u aren't qualified at all to say if he will be good or not. So stop acting like u know..

And for the last time, Engram isn't a TE.. He will never be lined up at TE. Thats why all the NFL teams gave him a low grade at TE..
