Let's start with DC.
Jim Leavitt really wanted this head coaching job. He had an offer to be the DC at Florida State before Willie even left. That remains on the table.
At the moment, Leavitt will mull his options. Overall he'd like to be a head coach somewhere. If that option comes up in the short term, he'll look at it.
If emotions get under control, there's a chance he stays at Oregon. A chance. In the end Leavitt isn't a fan of Taggart and how things played out here at Oregon. He could put that aside and go make $2 mil a year for the next 4 years.
He could also get a pay bump and stay at Oregon. Could. I know I've been adamant he won't unless he gets the head coaching gig, but cooler heads are prevailing and Leavitt is going to weigh all options.
I'm not saying he'll stay, I'm saying he COULD.
If Leavitt leaves, here's the likely scenario that will unfold.
Charles Clark will follow. To replace him, Cristobal will look at and evaluate Demetrice Martin and Donte' Williams to fill this void. Williams has an offer to coach at UCLA and USC currently so he might be a bit too expensive. We'll see.
Raymond Woodie and Donte' Pimpleton will likely go as well. Not a huge surprise there.
I did reach out to Gary Campbell two days ago in the event Mario was named head coach. I asked if he would consider coaching at Oregon again. He didn't say no, but he wasn't sure he would. We'll see now that it's official. Don't hold your breath for now.
Keith Heyward, Big Joe and Marcus are expected to stay in their current roles or something similar. Michael Johnson is a bit of a wild card but I believe he's likely to stay.
I have also been told to keep tabs on Adrian Klemm as a very possible replacement for Mario Cristobal at O-Line. I also know Klemm would be chomping at the bit to join this staff at Oregon if he gets an opportunity.
Here's a name to keep right under your hat for DC if Leavitt in fact leaves.
Look up McNeese State head coach Lance Guidry. Not a name anyone will expect, but a name to know. He's a very hard-nosed defensive coach and the word is he'd love to just coach defense. Mario knows him well and he's going to be a real contender if that spot is open.
It will take some work, but Mario could bring Tosh Lupoi to Oregon. They do have a relationship and a mutual respect for one another. Now Saban won't just let him walk and he's making a big chunk of change right now. But he will get consideration.
I think Mario might also take a swing at Alex Grinch at Washington State. There's nothing better to add a quality coach to your team when it hurts an in-conference opponent as well. I'm not saying he will come, but he's only making about $600 K at Wazzu and I think Oregon can beat that if they want him.
Tim Derutyer at Cal, same story.
Danny Gonazales at SDSU and Andy Avalos are both making under $500K per year and could be ripe for the picking.
Peter Sirmon is another candidate. Cristobal is looking to surrround himself with people that understand the Pacific Northwest and have ties to Oregon if he can. Sirmon isn't at the top of the list, but he's on the list. He's making $950 K at Louisville now. I'm not sure Oregon can match that number but they could get close enough.
This list will change, but there is a lot of talent to start with here. A staff that includes Marcus Arroyo, Keith Heyward, Big Joe and add Donte' Williams and Adrian Klemm to it among others led by Mario Cristobal, well now that is a staff that can recruit with the best of them.
This was likely a big selling point for Cristobal with Mullens and a big reason he is now Oregon's next head coach.
