8 teams would create some lousy scenarios. Alabama could have forfeited the Auburn game and it would have benefited them. Or Clemson would have had zero motivation in the the ACC championship other than bragging rights. Actually, I think 5 teams would have worked this year with an O$U/Bama play in game to face Clemson. That would have been excited and would have added a little spice to the early bowl season. But school presidents arent going to sign off on that many football games.

Y'all have to take into account that the 2 semifinal game setup is on the verge of putting ESPN out of business due to the low rating and all the money they paid for this.
No TV station will have the stomach for more games with how CFP has been trending so far.
