Sophomore tight end
Michael Irvin Jr. was not in attendance for Miami’s win over Syracuse on Saturday and has been suspended indefinitely.
"Irvin just hasn't done what he's supposed to do off the field and until he does, we won't let him play," head coach
Mark Richt said on Sunday's teleconference.
Irvin Jr., who had played in the first five games in a reserve role catching three passes for 39 yards, was in a scout team jersey during Wednesday’s practice indicating his status with the team was in question.
Last season, Irvin Jr. served a one-game suspension in the Russell Athletic Bowl for an unspecified reason. He entered fall camp struggling to earn the backup spot ahead of walk-on
Malik Curry and
Brian Polendeybefore eventually earning the job. Recently-converted defensive end
Scott Patchanmoved into the backup role on Saturday.
Irvin Jr. has been unable to provide the Hurricanes with a two-headed attack at tight like they had last season with
David Njokuand Herndon, who has received a bulk of the snaps and catches this season with Njoku off to the NFL.
