FYI for those who enjoyed watching my young Vols suffer thru all those close losses this year, just remember, Tennessee returns 18 starters in 2016. As well as 38 of 44 in its 2 deep.
The 2015 Vols were one of the youngest teams in the nation. 12 starters were freshmen or sophomores. 6 starters were juniors. And only 4 starters were seniors. None of those seniors being significant losses. In fact other than for 3 juniors (Josh Dobbs, Cam Sutton, and Jalen Reeves-Maybin) the rest of Tennessee's great players were freshmen and sophomores.
The fact we pushed 2 eventual playoff teams to the limit with a nucleus of freshmen and sophomores shows the level of talent this team has and it's promise. Those back to back top 5 recruiting classes are paying off. No other team in America played 2 playoff teams. And even with that brutal schedule, we dominated Oklahoma for 3 quarters building a 14 point 4th quarter lead and went toe to toe with Alabama for 48 minutes even taking a lead with 5 minutes left.
Tennessee lost 4 games (to elite competition) by a combined 17 points. They led by double digits in 3 of the 4 losses. They led in the 4th quarter in 3 of the 4 losses. This is literally a football team that is 3-4 plays away from being 11-1.
What you saw in 2015 was the trial run of a future championship team. We suffered some devastating losses this year because of youth and lack of experienced depth. That won't be an issue next year. After we throttle Northwestern, expect us to be a preseason top 10 team next year and a media favorite to be a darkhorse playoff team. The future is bright on rocky top.
