Surprises: Running Back Jonathan Grimes has been exactly what the Texans look for in a 3rd/4th RB. Grimes runs with conviction and shows a good deal of burst, but he also has shown an ability to help out on special teams. Last year, Kubiak kept four RBs on the roster for much of the year and I expect that he’ll do the same thing to open up 2012. Trindon Holliday isn’t going to be a factor as a wide receiver, but his ability to make big plays in the return game could earn him a place on the roster. Keep in mind that Justin Forsett can handle kick return duties and Keshawn Martin can handle punt return duties so Kubiak could still opt to get rid of Holliday.
In the Mix: Andrew Gardner is a versatile offensive lineman and that versatility could still earn him a spot on the roster if Kubiak opts for more offensive line depth. Safety Shiloh Keo has been much better this year than last, but he still isn’t going to be a factor for any playing time at safety. If Keo makes it, it’s because special teams coach Joe Marciano says he wants him as a “teams” player. While I believe the Texans would probably scour the waiver wire for a nose tackle if need be, Loni Fangupo still has an outside chance of making it on the roster if Shaun Cody doesn’t bounce-back from injury like the Texans are expecting. Roc Carmichael landed on the injured reserve last year so there is still much to learn about him, but he might not be far enough along to hang on to a spot.

Positions most likely to be filled by waiver wire
Fullback - Moran Norris and Derrell Smith are battling for the second FB spot (if Kubiak even keeps two), but the Texans might opt to see if they can find a better fit after cuts have taken place.
Inside Linebacker - The group of linebackers currently in place for the Texans who aren’t named Brian Cushing look very, very average. I don’t know if Wade Phillip’s scheme and terminology would preclude the Texans from adding an ILB on the fly, but there is a decent chance that a more talented player than what they have two-deep can be had on the waiver wire.
Nose Tackle - The Texans NT position has decent talent, but Sunny Harris would making a big push to earn a roster spot before he was injured. If the Texans would like more size up front, they could opt to bring in a veteran and run with three NTs on the roster.
Cornerback – Alan Ball certainly hasn’t lit it up in camp or in preseason and while he’s a veteran who knows Phillips’ defense, the Texans might want to look for another CB with size and experience on the waiver wire who can potentially rotate in with Kareem Jackson. Brandon Harris isn’t as big as the Texans usually like at the outside CB spot and with Jason Allen gone, the Texans might feel like they still need to find someone who can fit into that CB spot and contribute.
