Definitely a step up from Headshot (director's previous film), which I thought was solid but not as good as this. It really does a great job of upping the action over the course of the film and ending on a high note. Was impressed with how clearly everything was shot, none of that multiple cuts or shaky cam shyt that can be overused in American films .
A lot of people have said it's a horror movie, and the action is certainly brutal with a bunch of moments that had me . It does a great job in setting up the tension when you know shyt is about to go down, and you're wondering how the characters will get out of a crazy situation , the answer is usually with broken bones, torn ligaments, and chopped limbs .
There is a lot of action, but they did a nice job in keeping it fresh with the camera perspectives, locations, creative deaths, and characters. There are the low-level goons used as punching bags, but they introduce a number of characters that are memorable with little dialogue.
to Bobby and Faith, along with motor-cycle girl with putting in work protecting Reina. The final shot of Ito driving into death was great as well.
It's definitely a much better flick than Headshot and Killers (maybe because this was directed by only one of the "Mo brothers"?), but as far as action direction goes it's still not all there yet with some really poor editing and a lot of shots where you can tell there is no contact whatsoever.
The movie is pretty much saved because it's raw as fukk with the gore and utilizes almost entirely practical effects to bring every imaginative kill to life (or rather, gruesome death). At one point in the movie I shyt you not, I was literally thinking that this movie must contain every way possible that a man can be killed outside of a testicle/dikk attack and the main character's next move was precisely slicing a guy's crotch open with a crescent blade. No flick can top this in terms of gore porn this year, that's for sure.
Add a final fight that might be the most overly grotesque fight scene since They Live and you'll definitely be entertained, although it never can escape its B-movie vibe.
