When automation and complex AI hits, it will take over, because there will literally be nothing else to do.

The conundrum that you have is, just like in the Matrix, a utopian society would have large swaths of people killing themselves because there is no purpose to life anymore. Utility, healthy challenges and mental health coincide with each a lot more than people want to admit.

So the odd paradox would be either we actually have to know we are in the Matrix and periodically have to disengage from it or they would have to make the Matrix exactly like the real world, which would defeat the purpose of the Matrix.
