I think it's when he spit this line:

Sosa these nikkas hit the God bring the toaster
Meet me in the Bridge I'm bout to go loca

Loca is the feminine version of loco. Because he is a man he should have said "loco" but it sounds ill to use loca there.
I always thought it was the "get they fingers on the dosa" line...

Dunno about that, a lot of black hip hop heads were disappointed in IWW. The Complex mag article even points out Q-Tip told the Trackmasters they were fukking up Nas' career. That being said the streets fukked with IWW. A lot of "real hip hop" fans were disappointed though, hence the "Nas sold out/Nas only has one good album" shyt that existed until Stillmatic came out. Not saying most or everyone thought that, but that's what a lot of hip hop heads were saying.

You're not wrong. But I'm saying he was trying to reach a wider audience and it was largely a black audience at the time that he connected with. A different one from Illmatic, which created the blow back. It wasn't pandering to a white audience tho.

I agree overall. I think it's clear IWW was definitely aimed at having mainstream appeal, hence the "sell out" accusations. If I Ruled The World is a blatant attempt at radio play. And...it worked, and it was dope. Black Girl Lost is another ladies track that hip hop heads got upset over. And of course the Dre track is very mainstream.

Overall it's a really good album. There are degrees of "sell out sophomore album" to me. I think this album is less of a sell out than say...Vol 1 for instance, which has more songs blatantly tuned for radio and IMO was a pretty meh project.

On "The Set-Up" feat. Havoc:

"I must admit, I said something stupid on that record. I was high and changed words around and I said a word that didn’t make sense. I didn’t realize it until the album was mastered. But I won’t put a spotlight on it—I’m not going to tell you what it was. The word makes sense but it didn’t make sense on what I said I was doing. I overthought it."

Anyone know what Nas is referring to here?
Maybe in the first verse when he says he's gonna go "loca"... :manny:

all the best talents get swallowed up by the machine, nas only got one album in before his music shifted and went to shyt. Went from " I rap for listeners, blunt heads, and prisoners" to having rnb hooks and playing mob boss over shiny polished beats, fukk that album

Jay Zs swan song is "You Must Love Me" off his sophomore album before his industry incarnate took over. I would post the song but it can only be found on tidal since jay cant make money off it otherwise and it all goes back to profit remember

i'ma say it once and i'll say it again, IWW was NOT a SELL OUT ALBUM!!!! R&B hooks don't automatically mean "watered down/catering to pop audience" and he only had like what, 2 R&B hooks on there?? If i rule the world was far from a pop record, that was a REAL RECORD with top notch lyricism and it was speaking on the youth!! I dare anyone to point out an "If i rule the world" in today's times... not even Kendrick could do one if he wanted to! The rest of the album was hard, dark, gritty, nothing polished like some wanna front on. Now let me tell you this, the Dr Dre beat has gotten wayyy better over time! That's one of those beats that was ahead of its time, the best mixed record on that whole project. If you don't f*ck with it, its not cuz of the beat its cuz of the hook but even that is tolerable. The whole album is top notch and is def Nas's transformation into an ARTIST, not just a NY mixtape rapper. This album is the reason why Nas has had longevity, or else he would have ended up like Kool G Rap, which is no disrespect, but if G Rap had an IWW, he'd be where Nas is today.
