Just from a simple glance.....
1) You need to redesign the site and make it look professional. Either hire a professional web designer or use a premium theme from themeforest.
2) You may want to consider guest blogging: Basically you become a guest writer for another, more popular sports blog and post a link back to your site.
3) You may also consider making a youtube channel associated with your site. Maybe you and your friends can get together and post parodies that make fun of athletes or something (like a comedy sketch of Kobe Bryant going crazy over white girls, or a Kevin Garnett lookalike eating honeynut cheerios)
4) Install google analytics on your site so you can extrapolate data on the people who visit your site.
5) Install google adsense.
6) Consider making a message boards. When people stay on your site and interact with each other this reflects on your site's keyword rankings.
Thanks, man. I appreciate it. This is my first real shot at this (actually buying a domain and hosting etc) so all advice helps.
aint that niche highly competitive as well? How would you make a legit profit on a brand new site like those if you don't own the content?

Dont wanna sound like an a$$hole but it all depends.
One thing you DONT want to do is cheat the system if you get in (ie Google Adsense)
