Couple freebie Fridays in a row. This discussion with Grim about the lab leak was interesting.

Also…

David Dayen bringing up RFK Jr. was pretty hilarious. I forgot RFK and Sam were co-hosts of Ring of Fire Radio.

I don’t listen to the fun half so I can’t comment on that portion of the show. As for the first hour, they probably spend about 10 minutes a week in total on trans issues. It’d be less than that if the right wasn’t using it as a wedge.

I have made comments in this thread and others about how I think we are focusing too much political energy on this conversation when we should broaden it to a larger privacy/bodily autonomy/human rights movement. And i define don’t like it as a litmus test for being a Dem.

However, this website and certain posters wouldn’t know what to do with themselves if they couldn’t demonize an out group and obsessively post about them for clicks.
I blame Emma for the trans stuff. They have to keep responding to the nuts on the right for it but it’s become too much

I thought it was interesting too. I had written the lab leak stuff off as nothing but MAGA conspiracy babble and it some ways it still is for the reasons they care about it, but Grim makes a good case for why it matters and why it's important to know if it really did come from these scientists wylin for some information that ultimately we probably won't be able to do shyt about once we make the discovery.

these scientists would be better off putting their knowledge and funding to something else, especially when a small fukk up could lead to catastrophic results. it sounds to me like President Obama had it right when he tried to cut back on that shyt after ebola.:francis:

i blame these insufferable callers from a couple months ago. they have trans people from scandanavia or dusseldorf or something complaining that sam doesnt cover some local school board meeting on trans students 4 thousand miles away from the gowanus canal as if he has the budget for international correspondents who specialize in trans minutiae. now they feel the need to step it up to please the loudest complainers

The initial call is hilarious. But I also wanna share this because Sam and Emma kid-gloved the hell out of Ryan Grim and if you skip to around 19 minutes in...Sam addresses a lot of the weak arguments Grim and other substackers are trying to push to create a lab-leak debate. There's no compelling evidence, just some circumstantial crap like out of context emails.

What ever happened to Nomiki? :lupe:
she got them to endorse her state senate run when there was already a progressive running and kind of blind sided them. a lot of people think she was running a spoiler candidate to split the vote help one of Joe Crowley's centrist relatives win the seat.

she was annoying and had mid borderline libbed up takes anyway. Matt Lech and Emma ended up shytting on her in one of the post games on Lech's podcast and I think no one wanted to work with her after that besides Sam, so they stopped having her on. :manny:

Has she spoken on why she left in the first place. That whole fiasco never sat right with me.

:hubie:

I always assumed that it was the obvious tension with Sam.

I think she just seemed too "out there" to Sam, and once Michael was no longer there to serve as a bridge between them, her days were numbered.

pretty sure it was mutual in the sense that she was unhappy with her role on the show, so she decided to move onto other things, but clearly it wasn't that bad if she's been back on to promote her stuff multiple times.

I don't think there was some secret behind the scenes blow up that led to Sam firing her or her quitting or anything that drastic. I guess you could argue that Sam may have made it an environment that wasn't the best for her. her role got significantly reduced once they were out of the studio during covid and she obviously had been having some contentious on air arguments/disagreements with Sam at the time. I believe she has said that she was the last one to know they were hiring Emma, so she probably felt like she was less part of the team.

but also she might have just been a bad fit for that type of show. she seems like a nice person and all, but sometimes she didn't seem prepared. she would make statements, some of which I agreed with, but then do a poor job backing them up when Sam would press her on them. some of it I'm sure is because it's tough to go up against someone as good at arguing as Sam is, but also some of it seemed like she either didn't think things all the way through before making statements or she just didn't have anything to back up what she was saying (which imo came off as unprepared or lazy) and then she'd get clowned on by Sam, which has to be embarrassing and not feel that great. it probably didn't make her like her job as much anymore, that's for sure.

but she was also clearly disinterested in electoral politics for the most part, which is a huge part of the show. so if you're going to come off like you don't care/you're clueless on certain issues, it doesn't surprise me that your role on the show would be reduced. I can't really blame Sam for that, as that has always been a huge part of the show.

I do wish there was someone else further to the left than Sam and Emma though, I just think there has to be someone else out there who would be better at expressing it on a show than Jamie was because when she'd look bad sometimes it would also make some of her actual good points look bad because she wasn't the best at arguing them.

That's pretty much Matt Lech. To be fair though, he does seem to understand that the show isn't exactly the place to preach, especially if it's going to get him butting heads with Sam. It would be nice to have some other leftists on the show, but if we're being honest, while I like Jamie, a sizable amount of leftists are kind of pie in the sky, theory over practicality types like her.
