netflix lucked out in the sense that their marketing basically did itself by becoming popular culture "netflix and chill". they have some good content but they don't seem to have someone that truly understands compelling television, and as such they spend a lot on subpar offerings.
on the other hand, amazon, despite having a handful of really strong shows, Sneaky Pete, Bosch, Jack Ryan, Patriot, and now The Expanse (which in my opinion is contender for GOAT sci-fi show ever), they just can't seem to be able to catch mainstream attention to the extent Netflix does. I know people with amazon prime that don't even know about their prime video service and their original series.
in an ideal world, netflix would have better quality control, and amazon better marketing. these services have the pockets to change and produce amazing series but they fumble for different reasons.
