I don’t think it the dysfunctional part that’s the sole problem. ALL communities are dysfunctional to some extent, but lack of overall trust and inability to get along only make dysfunction an additional obstacle.
Let’s first define what a community is. I believe every community serves a specific function. When that function is not being produced by the collective efforts of that community then it is dysfunctional.

One could also say that there are nuance and various degrees of dysfunction. However, I consider dtysfunctioning and non-functional the same term. In regards to what you are saying that is more so related to the efficiency of how that community serves a particular purpose.

Oprah love some trauma porn

Slavery was traumatic and it dealt with the psychological aftermath of it. Jim Crow era was traumatic and this show is dealing with the psychological aftermath. Our people experienced some horrific shyt. I think using magic realism to drive that point home is much needed
