It’s a lot of criollos in Cuba so that created a caste system between them and Spanish immigrants. Mulattos a lot of the time would identify as black just as Argentinians did as there was an active campaign to whiten Cuba by bringing more Europeans (specifically Spaniards). His father looked like Roberto Clemente so he faced a lot of racism. He couldn’t deny his blackness. Fidel was technically Criollo so he understood the discrimination from Spaniards and Spaniards born in the colonies. He didn’t necessarily side with blacks but he understood in a way Spaniard discrimination. The ousted governor of PR was also criollo.
