Dave is such a clown. The issue is that Sammy is a bum. Not that Shelton was formerly employed by the WWE.

What does this even mean? Shelton can go just as much as anyone on the roster, and he looks the part. His only issue is the same issue that the majority of the AEW roster has: mic skills that can range from non-existent to hit or miss. More importantly, Dog. It's Sammy fukking guava. He's not someone worth protecting.
I'm sure Dave was one of those people who complained about how the WCW guys were all jobbed out as part of the invasion angle. Sammy losing to Shelton is a step up from whatever bullshyt he would be doing otherwise because people might actually watch this.
