Joe Smith Jr. stopped Bernard Hopkins 53 seconds into the eighth round of their WBC international light heavyweight title fight Saturday night.
Smith used a six-punch combination to send Hopkins through the ropes and on to the floor, effectively ending the 51-year-old's 28-year boxing career.
Smith successfully defended his title when Hopkins was unable to return to the ring after 20 seconds. Hopkins hit his head on the way down and twisted his right ankle — he cited the ankle as the reason he couldn't finish. A WBC official said the injuries incurred forced a TKO.
Hopkins was reluctant to accept the outcome, initially claiming that he was shoved out of the ring.
Hopkins (56-8-2) was looking to wrap his career with one last showing of defensive-minded boxing in front of an enthusiastic, star-studded crowd at the Forum. Instead, he finished in the same manor he started, with a loss.
Wearing his old Executioner shorts as a throwback to his earlier fighting days, Hopkins looked his age early as Smith (23-1, 19 KOs) was the aggressor to start. Hopkins regained some footing in the fifth and sixth rounds but Smith gained momentum and took it with him through the eighth, when he pummeled Hopkins in a corner and sent him through the ropes.
In his prime, Hopkins won a record 20 consecutive middleweight title fights. He became the oldest-ever champion when he defended his light-heavyweight belt at 49. However, Hopkins hadn't fought in more than two years, losing to Sergey Kovalev on Nov. 8, 2014, in his last bout.

anyway, I came in here to say, I thought from the moment this fight was signed that it was a dangerous fight. also, Joe Smith isnt a great fighter but he is better than people give him credit for. he is very basic, but the basic things he does, he does really well. like he uses his feet very well to apply pressure. he uses his jab very well also. the issue is, he is so basic. the basic things he does that makes him good are also his weaknesses. there are gonna be guys that outbox him but he isnt going to be a walk in the park for anyone. its a good win. Bernard isnt that far off from what he was 3 years ago IMO. its just that he kept biting off more than he could eventually chew with these guys. he looked at Smith and saw Pavlik all over again, but this aint 2008.
He would've been better off getting put to sleep in the middle of the ring ala Roy...then the shyt would've been just sad instead of funny.

Whatever, he's made millions, he'll be fine. But some poetic justice last night to get KO'ed like that in your final fight against a "white boy." What did Hov say again about looking in the mirror and still not seeing what you become?
this is all fact, but I want to add, as great as BHop was as a fighter that can never be taken away from him but he was the biggest conman in between the ropes the sport has ever seen. he milked the game for all he could get with no remorse. I remember going back and forth with people when he faked that injury against Dawson and got the fight reversed to a TD. he had done it previously with Echols. but you cant tell nikkas nuttin. Bernard doesnt like to lose even if he has to cheat and lie to do it. nearly every injury he has had I guaranteed he faked it. he may have truly hurt his ankle last night because he got blasted out the ring, but in my eyes its poetic justice for someone who I think has a clear history of suspect injuries.
One of the dirtiest fighters in the game, but is credited as being a crafty veteran when he does b!tch made ish in and outside the ring.
