It's not a real photo. Actually you'll know that many of the photos released by NASA with vibrant colors, black holes, pics outside of the current view of the milky way etc...are post processed a lot. They're photoshopped basically, but they're supposed to represent somewhat of an accurate portrayal.

You just reminded me of this short scifi story i read as a kid. The reason we havent met other beings was each planet was encased in a way and could only leave its restricted area once it reached a certain level of technology and evolution. So all the immature violent racesn/beings were not yet ready to join the galactic neighbourhood...
