Nintendo's SNES turns 30 years old, fans celebrate the classic system | Dot Esports

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System is officially 30 years old, having launched on Aug. 23, 1991, just under a year after the Super Famicom was originally released in Japan.

As a follow-up to the popular NES system, the SNES was an instant success upon release, eventually selling approximately 49.1 million worldwide throughout its lifetime. That was mostly attributed to 23.4 million units sold in the Americas and 17.2 million units in Japan, making it the best-selling console of its generation.

Despite being a success, it could not match the early momentum of its predecessor, which sold a total of 61.9 million units worldwide. It did outsell several of its successors, including the Nintendo 64, GameCube, and Wii U.
Many will remember this period for the “Console Wars” heating up with the release of the Sega Genesis, however, the SNES managed to outlast the competition and come out of the 16-bit era on top.

Nintendo’s second mainstream console had more than 50 individual games sell more than one million units during its lifetime. Here are the top five best-selling titles released for the SNES, with Mario dominating the rankings.

  • Super Mario World: 20.6 million units
  • Super Mario All-Stars: 10.6 million units
  • Donkey Kong Country: 9.3 million units
  • Super Mario Kart: 8.8 million units
  • Street Fighter II: The World Warrior: 6.3 million units
The SNES era is also one of few periods in gaming that has been extremely well-preserved by Nintendo across multiple console generations, with many of the system’s classic games being bundled in with the Nintendo Switch’s online service.

To celebrate the system, fans have been posting their favorite SNES memories and games on social media, reliving three decades of gaming history.

Peace to the SNES and its legacy. IMO it’s still the GOAT game console, rivaled only by the first two Playstations. (The Genesis and Dreamcast had heat though.)

Chrono Trigger, Mario RPG, Super Metroid, FFVI, Yoshi’s Island, Mega Man X, a Link to the Past, Castlevania, Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Mario Kart, Super Mario World/All-Stars :blessed:

You acting like 64 didn't have just as many all time greats?

Nintendo sports shaped sports games as you know it during this era. Without Kobe Bryant NBA Courtside there wouldn't be a 2k. Not like what you see today, most of Kobes game control wise is what you see today.

Griffey Jr baseball >>> MLB the show

SNES did have super tennis and NHL Stanley cup :banderas:

Mario64

First games I ever played as a kid was Super Mario World and Mortal Kombat 2 on the SNES:mjcry:
My sister had an nes when the snes came out and my parents couodnt justify buying a $150 console for a 7 year old. When i turned 9 i got a bunch of money (or to me 100 bucks was a bunch) and a kid at school sold me his for 50 bucks…i wasnt even thinking of games, he threw in super mario, super scope 6 with those games and MK 2….ahhh the memory’s, esp my birthday party that year…and the system still works and is hooked up at my parents :wow:

64's library was abysmal, outside first party

Facts. Nintendo really ethered themselves badly by sticking with cartridges instead of making CD based games back in the 90’s. That move, plus their reneging on the Sony deal to work with Phillips (:trash:) drove away third party developers and led to Sony taking their lunch money for well over a decade.

How are you the goat when you can’t even outsell the Sega Saturn in your home country?
How are you the goat when third party devs are only giving you their leftovers?
How are you the goat when Paper Mario is arguably the only decent RPG on your system?
How are you the goat when you barely have any fighting games worth playing? (MvC, Street Fighter)

The 64 has a fire first and second party catalog for sure but the SNES had a better third party lineup and a lot of those older 16 bit games aged way more gracefully than the earliest 3D games.
