So you guys might not know but for the presidential election, a candidate needs to be vouched by at least 500 mayors. There are 35k mayors and the cut off period to get those vouchers are usually something like a month from the election.

This year, the deadline is March 4th which is next Friday. But for a voucher to be certified, there are some rules that makes things complicated :
- a candidate needs mayors from at least 30 differents departments (sub regions) out of our 101 ones.
- a candidate cannot have more than 10% of vouchers from the same department

So usually candidates submit more than 500 vouchers to be sure that they have at least 500 certified ones ultimately

Currently, only 7 candidates are certified and Le Pen or Melenchon still need some. MĂ©lenchon is at 442 and Le Pen at 393. They will most likely get in as usually those who lack vouchers get a huge bump in the final week bit it could more spicy for Zemmour who is at 350 right now. I think he may not pass the cut

Les parrainages validés par candidat - Conseil constitutionnel présidentielle 2022

Interesting

What is the situation looking like right now in the polls? Are there any signs of the left/center-left consolidating (I assume not)?

Nah the left is on life support in France. :francis:

Melenchon or Jadot (Green) will probably have the highest score but they might not even get 10%.

Presidency will be between far right, conservative right and Macron right.

Damn, that last sentence really sums it all up.

Pretty sad when the choice ends up being different flavors of the right

The far right leaders are down bad today because of the Russian invasion. Le Pen and Zemmour are both Russia-backed and today was basically a death sentence on their chances if they make it past the vouching period.

Zemmour is the worst, he was clowning Macron when he went to Moscow to negotiate with Putin and now he just made a speech where he solemnly called for Macron to go to Moscow to propose a French mediation. You can't make this up.

@Liu Kang so what happened with the vaxx pass stuff in France? It seems like most kf Western Europe is deading the idea all together.

Although I think that form of pass will come back in a few years.

It’s crazy to see The West looking more and more like China with all the tracking we got going on (facial recognition, vaxx passes etc).

Eh, I dont think this is like China IMO. This pass doesnt affect anything but you being able to enter private businesses.

The pass is just a qr code you have when you have done all your vaccines. Restaurants, theatres, museums and those kind of private places also have qr code.

When you go to one, you scan the qr code of the place so you get alerted if there's an outbreak. They also scan yours so the place can know everybody in there is vaxxed and the risk of contamination is low. If you dont have a pass, you cant enter.

There is no pass to enter shops, banks or places like that as you're not supposed to mingle there for long. The pass will most likely be phased out in a couple of weeks/months because the contamination rate is way down but I do think it's a good thing so we can reach immunity faster.

You might disagree with it but it makes things safer for vaccinated people and private businesses IMO.

I’m not a 100% sold on the notion that once done it’ll be phased out. Technology is iterative and now that there is learned behavior of showing some pass to enter an establishment, that learned behavior can always be reignited under different circumstances.

With the vaxx pass, it’s less about risk of transmission and more a carrot stick to get more people vaxxed.

We can agree to disagree on becoming like China, but level of surveillance that has increased in the West as things have shifted to the digital has some parallels to what has been popping off in China.

I dont see the issue, this is not different than showing your passport between going on a plane. In emergency situations, there's not many ways to deal with this kind of pandemic unless you're going with the laissez-faire approach that would be deadlier. :manny:

And our world is becoming more technological, so surveillance will be too.

I deff do understand the need if big government in times of crisis. My bigger issue is the burden of proof required to enact such measures needed to be higher.

Just look at what occurred in Canada with Justin invoking some emergency powers when the bar for such action was not as high as he claimed. Even civil society in Canada said ole boy took it too far. We’ll see though.
