OK, I've let the other Film Room brehs do enough work on these lists. I'll take this month.
One change from other lists though, I'm not doing math. So I don't care about the order, whether you number them, etc. Every vote is the same. (However, feel free to rank yours for discussion/entertainment. I will be doing so).
The movie with the most TOTAL mentions/appearances on lists will top the list, and so on.
Personally, I differentiate between heist films and con man films, though they often overlap. Basically, a heist film, in almost all cases, needs "the big score"...con man films don't typically have that. If you don't want to make that distinction and want to put The Spanish Prisoner or Matchstick Men on your list, go for it. They'd be ineligible for mine. The one spot it gets the most sticky though, is the overlap with noir and films like Criss Cross. I'll leave it up to you guys as to whether or not you define them as a "heist" film.
So, list the 10 most "essential" heist films, however you define or interpret that.
Voting will remain open through the end of September. I'll try and reveal the final list on October 1st.
Heist film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The heist film is a subgenre of the crime. It focuses on the planning, execution, and aftermath of a theft. A typical film includes many plot twists, with the focus on the characters' attempts to formulate a plan, carry it out, and escape with the goods.
Here is a fantastic essay/piece about the history of the genre
