So this thread may have been done before so I apologize if it has but I just got around to watching Infernal Affairs (gimme my late pass, my b) and The Departed is one of my fav flicks and definitely my favorite of that year so it was a weird watch because I'm used to it rather than the original but which is better? To me, The Departed is better because it allows for more nuance, Jack's villain is much better than his counterpart, and as I found out, it's a combination of all three movies in the trilogy so it tells a fuller story. Also, I like the idea of the cop in charge of the undercover officers being split into two characters (Queenan/ Dignam)

I think they're both overrated, but I prefer The Departed.

It's hard to know if it's because I saw it first, but I agree with all of your points. Nicholson's CHARACTER was better, but I'm not a fan of his performance. Hammy as fukk.

Why so breh

Mostly because of the Jack Nicklson character, he was so over the top with it. Like he was aiming for that Oscar nom.

I liked the ending in IA better.

Infernal Affairs was way gritty, it made me a fan of Korean cinema.

The stupid rat on the railing scene in the departed. :snoop:

I tried watching Infernal Affairs once and I thought it was trash.

Cheap looking, badly directed AND terrible storytelling that made no sense.

And I love a lot of Asian crime cinema but the shyt was weak to me.

It's a very flat movie. And heavy handed as far as making sure you know the themes. The departed has that one moment with the rat at the end but that doesn't ruin the movie for me at all. Infernal affairs just seemed to jump around a lot

Saw Infernal Affairs back in 02 & still thought it was the superior movie to The Departed. IA's acting was better & created a more tense environment for the characters. TD was ok in its on right but not nearly as good as IA
