Central Park Five (1989)

The initial story of the crime, as told by the police and prosecutors, was that a band of young people, part of a larger gang that rampaged through Central Park, had mercilessly beaten and sexually assaulted the jogger. The story quickly exploded into the public psyche, fanned by politicians and sensational news reports that served to inflame racial tensions.

The five black and Hispanic men, ages 14 to 16 at the time of their arrests, claimed that incriminating statements they had given had been coerced by the authorities. The statements were ruled admissible, and the men were convicted in two separate trials in 1990.

The lawsuit had accused the city’s police and prosecutors of false arrest, malicious prosecution and a racially motivated conspiracy to deprive the men of their civil rights, allegations which the administration of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg denied and fought vigorously for more than a decade in federal court.

Thought I'd share my own story on this topic. I was in a group chat with a few people and had a disagreement with a white girl as she was being horrible about someone who struggled with mental health issues.

Thought nothing of it and continued to get my bus everyday(that she also got) and my friend at the time usually sat next to her so I'd say hello to him and sit down away from them. This happened for a week until one day I was called into the headteachers office regarding bullying. According to her, I was making the girl feel uncomfortable on the bus and cyber bullying her and that her parents were going to inform the police and that I may possibly be suspended just before my exams.

Luckily Id always been able to get myself out of school trouble and managed to get the complaint reduced to a half day detention on some Johnnie Cochran shyt but I've always thought what would happen if I didnt stand up to myself and allowed those cacs to ruin my future? My cac "friend" didn't even bother helping and decided he wasnt going to get involved because he was trying to smash. For this alone Ill never allow my child to go to a predominately white school.
