Exactly.
We may not like the contracts that's been dealt, but you can't blame the players for seeking security.
What is loyalty in sports? Like seriously.
If I help somebody, I don't really expect anything to return. I do it because I want to. The whole point is to see someone get ahead and put themselves in a better position than before. Not to give them help now so you can reap the benefits later at their expense. More often than not they'll return the favor because the initial help comes from a genuine place. If they decide to return the favorite then its because they want to and not because they have to. A genuine approach goes a long way. Jerry is loyal, but he's not THAT loyal. Not even gonna get into Stephen.
Jerry's loyalty only goes as far as your talent and production. He was loyal to Ware until injuries caused the production to dip and didn't match the salary. Let him go. He was loyal to Romo until injuries prevented his production from matching his salary. Dak came in and Jerry didn't let him get his job back. He was loyal to Dez and his situation until his production didn't match the salary. He let him go. He was loyal to Jaylon and his situation until his production didn't match his salary. He let him go. He was loyal to Collins and his situation until his production didn't match his salary. Now he's looking to trade him.
Is Gregory obligated to the Cowboys because they "stuck" by him? No because if he didn't perform and show flashes then he would've been let go a long time ago with no offers on the table. And I doubt the Cowboys would've continued to use their resources to help him. It's not about him as a person, it's about him as a player. If they really gave a damn about him as a person then they would've then simply applaud him for the turnaround he's made since he came into the league and understand that a team came with a better offer with no contingencies in his deal. Be happy for him. Its business. They approached the negotiations as business and he treated it as such. It is what it is.
His contract was bullshyt anyway. 5 years and $70M was reported but the guarantee was only $28M so really it was 2/$28M with $14M per. He likely isn't seeing the rest of the $42M and then add on the stipulations on top of that. It's easy to get caught up in shyt as an athlete. Forget the weed. All it takes is something out of your control like a goofy homeboy or a bitter ex-gf to blow up your situation. Anything can happen so you can't blame him for taking the route where if something happens then at least he knows he's getting money coming his way.
What is loyalty in sports? Loyalty got Russ and Bobby Wagner moved on the same day. They came in together and stuck it out the longest. The Seahawks need to do a proper rebuild and those two don't help their bottomline so unfortunately, they had to move them. So much for loyalty when there wasn't even the common decency of a phone call to Bobby Wagner to give him a heads up.
At the end of the day coaches and members of the front office move just as much as players and operatorate in the best interests of their bottomline, but they don't get the same flack. I don't blame a player for looking out for self because everybody else will do the same when it comes down to it. We should applaud loyalty when it comes around, but a player isn't obligated. shyt, most of these owners aren't obligated to put a winning product on the field as long as their financial obligations are satisfied. Front office and coaches aren't loyal to the job because they leave for better positions all the time. Why ask the players for loyalty when history shows it's often one sided. Hell, where's the loyalty when the CBA rolls around?
