They were a factor before that, it's just in the last 20 years the difference in payrolls and resources are more pronounced. Even with accounting for that, the Sox had some good teams in the 60s, great teams in the 70s, great teams in the 80s, but didn't win until '04.
Also, in the last 4-5 years we are starting to see smaller clubs win it all and retain players. It's not a fluke that Theo was involved with both teams
