By back then you mean late 90s/early 00s?Back then there was good rock music in that era I'm biased since I grew up with it tho

Problem was that bands seemed like they didn't care anymore since rap dominated in popularity since NWA and public enemy
But in terms of triple k he a motorhead Stanley so I don't expect him to even care what the young audience listens to
We all feel nostalgic about certain times, but objectively speaking if we compare 70s/80s/early and mid 90s rock music to that nu metal era, those eras had better quality.
All we have to do is compare vinyl records of each era and we'll notice in later years a lot of bands would stop caring about record as a whole and just a release a few good songs (that they could use touring) and the rest of it would be trash.
And unfortunately rappers were going same route as well back in late 90s with so many songs just being skippable trash
