Are Computers Making Society More Unequal?

"...It’s not just, Cowen writes, that the old economy, built on factory work and mid-level office jobs, has stagnated. It’s that the nature of work itself is changing, largely because of the increasing power of intelligent machines. Smart software, Cowen argues, is transforming almost everything about work, and ushering in an era of “hyper-meritocracy.” It makes workers redundant, by doing their work for them. It makes work more unforgiving, by tracking our mistakes. And it creates an entirely new class of workers: people who know how to manage and interpret computer systems, and whose work, instead of competing with the software, augments and extends it. Over the next several decades, Cowen predicts, wages for that new class of workers will grow rapidly, while the rest will be left behind."

Learn how to type 100wpm while you do it. Worst case scenario if you cant make it in IT, you can do dictations for dr's and type up their reports. Real good money, friends.

Very curious to hear about what is causing the stress to my Coli brehs in the IT field?

Been heavily considering making the career switch from Law to IT, due to advancement opportunities, and salary/bonus structures. I am rarely ever stressed at my current job, but have no problem taking it on if the compensation is there. I work hard but obviously still want the balance where I'm not taking it home daily.

Depends on your work. Debugging a problem in a project with a deadline is stressful.
Non-project deadline but you provide 24/7 support for a very important application/program. You are pseudo-tethered to staying at home on the weekends, because you need access to a hard-wired connection, (if you VPN into an internal network at work, and can't do that at public wi-fi places), or you bring your work laptop and on-call cellphone on vacation. :sadbron:
