Stuff I'd like to buy because I think it looks cool, but would just sit in my closet...

A Waxed Canvas Jacket - A bunch of people make this, esp Barbour

Madras Jacket

Japanese Denim as a genre. 300+ dollar jeans = special occasion, even though they're meant for everyday wear...

I have a couple of shirt jackets. I like them. Haven't found a lot of chances to wear them this winter. But for the fall and spring they're handy.

I don't have a waxed jacket anymore. I used to have a relatively cheap one from Lands End years ago. I wore it out tho.

As far as the whole selvedge/raw/Japanese denim...fukk off. Jeans are a utilitarian item. They're workman's clothes. People just made them into a fashion thing. I don't need to spend hundreds of dollars for some shyt like that. Nobody's ever gonna notice that you have expensive jeans. And less than nobody is ever gonna give a fukk. That's some shyt YOU buy to flex your own ego. (Not you personally WIA). I could buy some great quality wool or cotton trousers or sweaters for that kind of money.

Not to mention raw denim is ugly. It's stiff. It drapes horribly on your legs. I really really really don't like it. The fact that it costs so much makes me hate it.

BTW,

I know my comments about style here are very opinionated. What's good for me isn't what's good for everyone else.
But I'm :flabbynsick: so you know...ignore me. LOL

On my GQ steez today.

This one of them fits, that to me, looks great on the page.

But

Would be totally forgetable in real life.

Like a fashionable Grey Man.

I feel like each one of these pieces would be great to have...but not together in this outfit.
For me.

Those trousers look great though.

You’re painting the whole industry with a broad brush. Japanese denim became a thing as a result of American WWII soldiers styling on them and that James Dean, white tee shirt, crisp Levi’s, leather jacket aesthetic stuck. A sleepy seaside town called Kojima, Okayama was a manufacturing hub for indigo dyed fabrics for traditional Japanese clothing. When that style of dress went out of style, they pivoted to what the young kids wanted…Levi jeans knockoffs. They incorporated their traditional dying techniques and made what we know as Japanese raw denim. Not all of it expensive…one my favorites are pure blue japan, usually $120 a pair.

I think you're right. I DO have a narrow, judgmental view of this expensive denim craze of the past decade or so.

I think in part it's that I don't necessarily see the value in that denim for me.
And I also think it's in part that...I feel like denim overall has become the standard pants in America (or society) and it probably shouldn't be. I think broadly speaking a nice pair of chinos or wool trousers not only looks better but actually feels better, too.

But in trying to be somewhat self-aware -- I'm probably wrong about this at best...or a tiny, tiny, tiny minority that feels this way.

I get excited at everything you post in the Cologne thread and I get annoyed AF at almost everything you post in this thread.

My goodness, I dislike just about everything about Will Smith and his family.
