Phil Jackson actually told Melo, he needs to take a pay cut so he could afford to get anybody in free agency but they didn't......I think they were in panic mode that they might lose Melo so they had to offer him max contract

plus between shumpert,JR, and Hardaway jr they have a valuable trade asset to get another piece
dalembart can provide a nice healthy defensive big so they don't have to deal with all those injuries
to be honesy i think they are looking decent enough going forward
