Wouldn't step 0 basically be insider trading which is illegal if I'm not mistaken?

not really. That’s like saying your broker can’t invest in the same stock you do. Theyre not getting information from any businesses. They just know where all the action is.

Short squeezes: Everything you need to know about the recent investing movement

What's "normal" for short interest depends on the company, the overall economic environment, and several other factors. But generally, a short interest in the double digits indicates that there is quite a bit of pessimism about the stock. Here are a few stocks that currently have high short interest and some with relatively low short interest for comparison's sake.

Company (Symbol) Short Interest (12/31/20)

GameStop
(NYSE: GME) 140.3%

Tanger Outlets 49.6%

Bed Bath & Beyond 37.2%

AMC Entertainment 53%

Data source: TD Ameritrade.

Does anyone know the percentage of stock shorted?
That's what I been looking for to make the call tomorrow morning...

My nerds telling me BB and KOSS are comparable to GME in terms of percentage of stock shorted...

I like to see the numbers myself though...
