Again I get that they have to pay cuz the stock price is well above where they shorted it.
They have to pay whether GME is at 1000 or 300 or 100. That’s the point you’re not addressing. If a retail investor buys today at 260. The stock could drop to 130 by time the HFs have to cut their losses. The HF still pay up, but that retail investor still lost half his investment; maybe significantly more if the stock falls back to where it belongs after the HF cuts their losses.
So again, why are you so sure it’ll hit 1000? These HFs owe, when do they need to pay? They surely can’t let that debt ride indefinitely.
