I wanted to bring up a discussion on this here but it would be too controversial. I was asked by one of my professors a question that I am still struggling with.

But to bring it up here would be inviting loons, trolls, and emotional responses from both sides of the argument.

Do it.

the DSM IV (I guess the V came out today) categorizes illnesses by a pretty broad range of reasons, a quite a few of which revolve around lack of concrete research and the still need for care and attention. ie, for exam, being a transgender individual might be characterized as mentally ill, not for any reasons of great health implications or to place stigma, as much as a make insurance companies cover therapies and treatments for those individuals

science of psych is still so much so in its gray areas in terms of basic to clinical research, I feel like it kind of worked backwards. It's hard to study things like headaches or depression in mice (assays for depression is like holding a mice by its tail and to see whether it moves like normal, or to sink it in water to see if it drowns if its depressed).

as imaging like fmri gets cheaper and such, i think more and more will be established but the definition of mental illness will always go from broad to narrow for the field and the possible patient

The battle was lost the day they declared homosexuality and trannies as normal. From there, it can only go down. Its obvious they dont know what the fukk they're talking about. Great at stating the obvious, telling you about yourself, terrible at actually fixing people. Religion has a better turnaround rate than psychology.

Defining is the problem. Every person is unique. Yet we all exhibit certain patterns. Each case has to be taken individually. Some mental illnesses are a reaction to the persons state of life. There is no definition of normal, some mental illnesses are borne from the person struggling to fit in what is normal. A disconnect or inability to accept reality. Or wanting to exist in a different, yet possible? reality.

Some people are just gone. The way we go about looking at mental disorders probably need to change. We're trying to fit square pegs in round holes when maybe we should be finger painting.

should be fair game if the testosterone levels are about the same...
:lupe: really??

It's not fair game. Men have a higher rate of metabolism than women, there are too many skeletal differences to even list here, Men have larger lungs, Woman have larger stomachs, We don't know how menstruation affects women in fighting situations, Men have naturally more brute strength for their weight, Women have more water in their blood, ... Every cell in the human body is different in men and women because the core chromosomal pattern to make them is different. Women have hearts that beat faster than men.. I know that a slower more calm heart is always better in a fight situation.

We don't even know how those difference and about 100 other differences affect men and women. The sexes eat differently on average, care for children in different ways... women and young girls tend to hold their school books near their chest more often than men.... the same y u would hold a baby. Men pick shyt up and put shyt down differently than women. Women's natural reactions are different when fighting.

All that doesn't change just because a man has a mental disorder or because society has told him it's ok to be a certified bytch.

However, I'm religious, so I'm probably just a bigot, who read somewhere in the Bible that men shouldn't pretend to be women and beat them up before Jesus returns and says it's ok.

I have no idea what any of this has to do with two people who are the same weight, similar height and have relatively parallel levels of testosterone. If anything the male pretending to be a female, be at a disadvantage because they'll more estrogen in their system, to keep a feminine appearance, whereas the person born XX, can dope up on steroids or any other masculine producing PED ,care free.

If all those things didn't matter.... and I didn't have to explain to you the difference between men and women....

Then the competition would be mixed sex. It's not mixed sex because men and women are different and testosterone isn't the only determining factor of that difference. Men (including the homo boys) are stronger and more athletic, while women have a higher pain tolerance... everything is set up for certain reasons.

Plus scientist haven't agreed yet on if the T level being the same makes the fight equal.. The Olympics and NCAA agree with you though. I believe with the right treatments his bone density and estrogen levels might be the same as a women.. but there are non chemical components that still make it different. Plus men get treatments when they are adults... society and psychology have a lot to do with why men commit 90% of murders..

Bottom line.. If you're born a man, u can never be a women and any competition isn't fair if the goal is to have same sex people compete. It's just like when I'm at the gym and I see some races of guys getting toner quicker than others... people are different in this world.
