THE ART OF CONVERSATION
Mastering a conversation is essential a skill. Why is mastering a conversation important? Mastering conversation means you're capable of leadership, being decisive and taking control.
Plus when you master the art of conversation people associate a great time with you.
LESS IS MORE
1.) Remove filler words from your vocab. Why? Filler words shows uncertainty.
2. Relax. Take a few deep breaths. If you feel anxious or nervous don't be afraid to state it. We're all human.
3.) Say what's necessary and cut the excessive words. Sharing the most important details or what's relevant to the conversation not only makes you more influential but others are more likely to believe you.
LISTEN MORE TALK LESS!
"Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply"
Why is listening important? Because most people want to feel understood and heard. When you listen not only will you enhance your ability to understand better but you'll be a far more effective communicator.
Add some feedback like "Oh really", "Wow" "Hmmmm" to make it seem you're really listening.
If you're a man women love men who listen. Let her talk about herself.
ASK OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS
What are open ended questions? Open ended questions are questions cannot be a yes or no they require and convey thought. The best open ended questions start with "why", "how" and "what".
Questions are like conversation lubricants pay attention to the cues for a follow up. Be specific and curious as possible.
SENSE OF HUMOR
Part of mastering conversation is the ability to diffuse tension, adding humor and connecting with others.
Making people laugh is a life skill. It shows you have a fun playful side, you don't take things seriously and don't stress much.
For men if you can make a woman laugh you can pretty much make her gag
All jokes aside, laughter is the best medicine.
BEING WELL ROUNDED
Having a general knowledge on a variety of topics make you more well rounded. Always find the opportunity to do some research and broaden your horizon on topics you know and do not know. Whether it's food, health, relationships, black culture, travel, music etc. having a general understanding of a topic speaks depth in a conversation. If you feel short on a topic, don't be afraid to say "I don't know" people will respect you more for that.
KNOW WHEN AND WHERE TO CODE SWITCH
What is code switching? Code switching is the ability to switch in a formal vs informal setting. For example, in a corporate setting, you'll have to act, dress and talk formal. Why is this important? Because acting buck wild is gonna get your ass fired and unless you're working for yourself, we have to act on our best behavior cause you already know how the system is towards black people in this country. Just to keep in mind.
KEEP IT LIGHT
Going deep into a conversation is like going 0-1000. Relax! Small talk is less about the words and more about the person's attitude.
Avoid oversharing. Remember, the words you use can be used against you.
Once you feel comfortable with that person or at least shared some history, then you can go deep.
I decided to drop some gems to help those who are either socially anxious and need help with their social skills and also provide assistance to those who want to enhance their communication skills.
If you also have tips or advice feel free to put your 2 cents. Ciao!
