How is confidence gained? You surely aren't born with it. You can have the coolest parents but if you are adopted by suburban white parents, guess what, you will take on their and their environments square characteristics. So confidence is borne out of experience and overcoming obstacles, or as you wrote above "living and training", which army personnel do all throughout their career starting with boot camp. Whether it's gained early on on the block like yourself, or in organized sports, or in the army, that is a good thing and how it was gained is irrelevant.
