I once thought this too, when I was 15. Then I became a sophomore in HS and realized the 1st step to sucess is getting that high school diploma. Then after working (well volunteering for (at the time) city councilman Donald Payne. I realized that I would like to help my community no matter what. Then I graduated high school and realized without a college education, I would be limited. I was given a merit scholarship and went through college, I then realized that I must graduate, one day at a time. I graduated and went through some internships, then I got a job at one of my favorite channels MTV, then I realized that I can help my community through the power of media and perception. Now almost 20 years later, after working in television for almost 15 years and now having a small media consulting firm, I can tell you young black man the the American Dream is for you. Your road may be a little longer and a little harder, but you can succeed, you will succeed and most importantly you'll make a difference.

nikka please :rudy:

It's too many alternatives to success for you to be saying some shyt like that. Racism is real and prominent, but it's too many people in the world to let that shyt bother you. Quit with the loser/poor me shyt. That's the REAL problem.

The American Dream is OVER!

China is on the rise, and the middle class continues to shrink.

It's over, enjoy the history heap with the United Kingdom.

This is an inspiring story.

However, they still equate the American Dream as owning your home and economic viability.

I think most of y'all are missing the point of this article. It isn't saying that it's impossible for blacks to achieve or that it's so daunting that we shouldn't even try--I believe what is being said here is that upward mobility (or downward mobility from the wealthy class) is difficult for most Americans, especially minorities (due to inequalities in resources, healthy environments, and school etc.). So while it is possible to overcome the odds, it's not the norm, and the deck is certainly stacked against you.

And as I think about it more...the undercurrent of racism in American society ironically is destroying the America that the racist Americans are trying to preserve.
