How over was the godfather?
over enough that if he were around today and got those same pops you'd wonder why he wasn't a multiple time world champion.

in reality though, he wasn't as over as much as his gimmick and catchphrase were. and the hoes of course.

Name some

someone like jack swagger isn't over, his catchphrase is over. as for jack swagger the wrestler, nobody gives a shyt. no one marks for any of his moves, no one marks when he wins, no one cares when he loses... the only time he is over is those few seconds when he says we the people. immediately following that, he's back to being a nobody. he is one hit wonder. that's his only go-to trick.

the godfather had a few more hits. he had the hoes, he had the catchphrases... but he was mostly a sideshow. compare that to someone like Austin who is over each and every second he is out there from opening bell to closing bell, where the crowd hangs on every punch.

I said name someone who stayed over without a gimmick/catchphrases and you bring up Jack Swagger:what:

Austin had numerous catchphrases "What", "That's the bottom line...", Middle finger salutes, "Hell Yeah", "Austin 3:16" and he's stated numeorus times without the "Stone Cold" gimmick he would've been out on his ass.

and yet if austin in his prime cuts a 5 minute promo and doesn't utter a single catchphrase, he would still have the crowd in the palm of his hands.

austin was a solid, well rounded performer who didn't need to solely rely on catchphrases. they helped, but he had wayyy more tricks in the bag.

if we made a list of all the reasons why stone cold was over, you could break it down into so many categories. it wasn't just one thing. it was the swagger, the theme, the strut down the ring, the the look, the lou thesz press, the way he brawled inside the ring, the mudhole stomping, the stunner... he had SO MANY things going for him. he was over from bell to bell. COMBINE that with the dope mic skills and the numerous catchphrases and it's easy to see why he was a big star.

the stone cold gimmick just gave him direction, steve austin the performer filled in the rest. if you give the stone cold gimmick to headbanger mosh, no dice.
