Nigerian leaders really do not understand the influence and power they have at their feet. Unlike other African nations, Nigeria has the legs to stand on it's two feet. It has some weight to push off foreign influences, if only the leaders could come together and work on economic self sufficiency and independence.

You have to think chess, not checkers.

Secure your nation both economically and socially. When you're independent and don't depend on handouts, it'll be easier to subvert foreign influence.

How do you come to that conclusion?

Nigeria has the human capital to address much of it’s issues.

Example: When Ebola hit, Nigeria actually had the domestic medical force to contain the spread.

Additionally, Nigeria is a rich country by African standards. It has the capital to fund much of the projects it needs. It, Nigeria, is also not heavily indebted. Mismanagement is killing the country.

Nigeria has the largest amount of poor people in the world more than India and China that have about 5X the population. GDP per capita is the true measure of the wealth of a country (i.e people's income). Nigeria is in the same predicament as many of its African counterparts there is nothing exceptional about it. In other words rich in natural resources, rampant corruption, civil/religious strife, mismanagement and not immune to outside influences and forces and like many of its African counterparts, it has potential YES like again many of its African counterparts.

Almost damn near every African country has human capital and bright people but for some reason that cannot translate into prosperity for the masses.

what was the explanation for Kony 2012 in Uganda? It seem like it came and just disappear out of nowhere

I believe i know the reason but i just want to hear yall opinion

From what I remembered some white guy was on YouTube putting a lot of news/noise on some guy in Uganda. So much so that the US acted.

Then within 12 months, iirc, that same white guy was caught on video committing lewd acts in public. So when he went away the story went away.

That's all I remember off the top of my head.

Nigeria may not be heavily indebted compared to say Zambia, but it's borrowing to pay off interest from previous debts. Buhari's going to cause a debt-crisis in 4-8 years

I don't know why Nigerians think their country is inherently exceptional. Nigerians are not that different from say Congolese or Cameroonians in terms of their ability to stomach misgovernance. In fact, Nigerians might be more forgiving since Babangida, Gowon, Buhari (who they elected to be President), Abdulsalami Abubakar and Obasanjo are all alive and rich and aren't death or in imprisoned

Word on the street is that Zambia deported PLO Lumumba.

Govt Deports Prof PLO Lumumba

The lawyer was scheduled to deliver a public lecturer on China-Africa relations on Saturday night at Eden University.

PLO's lecture was to be centered on the theme 'Africa in the age of China influence and global geo-dynamics.”

After several attempts to get into the country, Zambian government officials stopped negotiation with PLO from the moment he landed at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, sending him back to the immigration department.

BREAKING: Prof PLO Lumumba Deported From Zambia; Blocked At The Airport, Was To Give Speech on China Africa Trade

He was expected to deliver a speech on Chinese investment in Africa at Golden Peacock Hotel in Lusaka this evening.
Note that Zambia is now a China colony after failing to repay debts owed on time, the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport is now owned by China as well as other strategic installations.

Zambia opposition protests against PLO Lumumba's deportation

The lawyer is a popular public speaker who is known for his pan-African views. The news of his deportation was covered by Kenya's press.

His deportation is being seen as an attempt by Zambia's authorities to stifle any negative discussion around its friendship with China amidst allegations that the government has accumulated a lot of debt by borrowing from the Asian economic giant.

Recently, the government rejected reports that it used some key public assets - such as the national broadcaster, the state-owned power company, Zesco, and the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport - as collateral for the loans.

China denied these allegations as well.

The deportation of Lumumba follows similar actions in recent months against South African opposition leader Mmusi Maimane and South African entertainer Rebecca Libram, popularly known as Zodwa Wabantu.

In August, Zimbabwean opposition figure Tendai Biti was arrested and handed back to authorities in that country after a failed attempt to seek asylum in Zambia.

So has the good times finally come to an end? Has Africa been sufficiently shaken out of monied lull to see the threat in front it? Or will it take several more countries becoming de-facto Chinese colonies before African Heads of State become, at the very least, outraged enough to speak loudly about it?

I'm sure there are a few who are saying "I told you so" and :umad:

Polls open in Cameroon as President Biya seeks seventh term
Six million to vote against a backdrop of unprecedented violence in the country's English-speaking regions.

by Fidelis Mbah
07 Oct 2018
Polls have opened in Cameroon with President Paul Biya seeking a seventh term.

Polling stations opened at 8am (07:00GMT) and will close at 6pm (17:00GMT) with more than six million people eligible to cast their ballots.

Biya, 85, faces an attempt by the opposition parties to forge a unified front under Maurice Kamto, leader of the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC). Biya has been in power since 1982, making him one of Africa's longest-serving rulers.

Al Jazeera's Hiba Morgan reporting from the capital, Yaounde said many voters were staying away from polling stations.

"Not many voters have showed up at the polling station where the president is expected to cast his vote shortly. Election observers and officials we spoke to have also told us they are not seeing a high voter turnout in other parts of the country." Morgan said.

Violent campaign
The election campaign was marked by violent clashes between security officials and opposition party supporters.

The growing fight over language in an officially bilingual country has killed hundreds of people and sent more than 200,000 people fleeing Cameroon's southwest and northwest regions.

Soldiers have been deployed after separatists threatened to disrupt voting in the English-speaking areas.

The violence was mostly reported from the opposition strongholds, where people had to flee their homes. Many who have been left behind have threatened to boycott the polls.

But the electoral commission said the polls will go ahead as scheduled, adding that some polling stations could be "relocated" to ensure a fair election.

Many election observers groups, including the African Union, have decided to skip the restive southwest and northwest regions.

Last month, religious leaders in Cameroon warned of a spike in violence, and appealed to both the military and armed groups to drop their guns.

The government, however, says only the separatists should drop their guns.

In the north of the country, more than 230,000 people have been displaced as soldiers tackle Boko Haram fighters from neighbouring Nigeria.

Language war
Separatist leaders in Anglophone regions want to secede and form their own country, called Ambazonia, resulting in their armed confrontation with the Cameroon military.

The armed movement grew out of frustrations in late 2016 by English-speaking teachers and lawyers with the dominance of the French language and the marginalisation of the country's Anglophone population.

Attacks on symbols of Cameroonian authority, including police killings and kidnappings of civil servants, mounted while local officials fled Anglophone areas, fearing for their lives.

More than 160,000 people have been internally displaced by the fighting and tens of thousands fled to Nigeria, according to the United Nations.

Soldiers have been accused of burning houses and killing residents in remote Anglophone villages.

The conduct of the Cameroon military was roundly condemned by human rights group, Amnesty International.

"The human rights violations committed by the Cameroonian security forces and authorities have also contributed to creating a pervasive climate of fear, which some observers say has led to a growing sense of alienation among communities in the Anglophone regions," Ilaria Allegrozzi, Lake Chad Researcher at Amnesty International, told Al Jazeera.

The governments of Ghana and Germany are likely to sign an agreement, that will lead to the setting up of a car manufacturing plant in the West African country.

The agreement will involve German car manufacturing giants Volkswagen if it is consummated.

This was disclosed by the President Nana Akufo-Addo as he received German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Flagstaff House.

The German leader is on a day’s visit to Ghana to hold discussions with her Ghanaian counterpart on migration, trade and investment.

She is accompanied by a Federal Minister and a high-level business delegation.

Merkel would later join a panel discussion on a €100million compact agreement for Africa which Ghana will be a beneficiary.

It is the first visit of a German Chancellor since 2004. Merkel is expected to visit Nigeria and Senegal from Ghana.

Addressing journalists, and representatives of the two governments Angela Merkel described Ghana as a “vanguard” of democracy and political stability.

She said the West African country has received best grades for the peace and stability it has recorded so far but said there was room for improvement in the country’s fight against corruption.

She said her country will work together with the Akufo-Addo led government in the fight against corruption, adding Ghana has made progress since the coming into power of the NPP government.

She called for more transparency in the tax administration in the country.

President Akufo-Addo on his part signalled the possibility of signing an agreement with Germany and the German car manufacturing company Volkswagen.

He said Merkel could not have come at an opportune time when Ghana is committed democracy, respect for human rights.

President admitted however that drug and human trafficking still remain a major challenge in the West African country which needed wider global collaboration to nip the canker in the bud.

He also spoke about the attempts by his government to build a strong economy to improve the standards of living of the citizens.

Nana Akufo-Addo said the visit by Merkel highlights the growing unity between the two countries and pledged Ghana’s commitment to work together for the betterment of the citizens of both countries.

Ghana Now A Net Exporter Of Electricity” – Akufo-Addo
NEWSTOP STORIES
By Justice Dzido On Oct 8, 2018

President Akufo-Addo Speaking at the Financial Times Africa Summit, in London

President Akufo-Addo says his government, over the last 21 months, has ensured stability and adequate supply of power in the country, in the place of the erratic power situation that it inherited.

Speaking at the Financial Times Africa Summit, in London, on Monday, 8th October, 2018, President Akufo-Addo indicated that his government, over the same period, has also ensured a reduction in tariff rates, with domestic consumers enjoying tariff reductions of up to 17.5%, and a 30% reduction for industry to stimulate industrial activity.

“In addition, a review of 24 power purchase agreements, which has led to the termination of 11 power deals and the rescheduling of 8 others, has enabled us to save the government treasury about $7 billion in excess capacity charges over a 13-year contract period,” the President said.

His government, he told the forum, has issued 7-year and 10-year cedi-denominated bonds, totalling GH¢4.7 billion, which have halved the $2.4 billion energy debt it inherited.

“Ghana, as a result, is today a net exporter of electricity. I was in Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Faso, last Friday, for the inauguration, with the President of Faso, His Excellency Roch Marc Christian Kabore, of the Bolgatanga (capital of Ghana’s Upper East Region) to Ouagadougou Power Interconnection Project, which will see, daily, up to 100 megawatts of power supplied directly to Burkina Faso from Ghana,” he added.

Time for economic transformation

After 25 years of a stable and free, democratic nation, with a strengthening market economy, President Akufo-Addo indicated that Ghana, today, has the best opportunity, since independence, to undertake a deliberate and meaningful transformation of her economic structure, and set it on the road to modern development.

As a relatively new entrant in the league of oil-producing countries, President Akufo-Addo indicated that Ghana has the perfect occasion to transform the structure of her economy through industrial and value-added commercial activities.

“We are determined to use our oil revenues to create assets, not waste it on consumption and accumulate debt,” he said.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo told the forum of his government’s desire to developing strategic industries out of Ghana’s abundant natural resources of bauxite and iron ore.

“We have established, by statute two months ago, a public commercial corporation, the Ghana Integrated Bauxite/Aluminium Development Corporation, to assemble the relevant financial resources for the full exploitation and development of the entire value chain, in Ghana, of our large bauxite deposits,” he said.

By the same token, President Akufo-Addo indicated that “we have decided to exploit our substantial iron ore and manganese deposits, situated in the Western and Northern regions of our country, to build an integrated steel industry to serve the needs of our country and region. We are seeking suitable partners for both ventures.”

His Government, the President assured, will ensure that businesses are up and running, having access to the capital, and, at the same time, maintain macro-economic stability, an efficient bureaucracy, a strong adherence to the rule of law, and a fair and equitable social system in health and education provision.
