Can you imagine a song like this being #1 in today’s time? Not just the fact that the talent level of these artists eclipse those of today by a wide margin. It’s the fact that it’s a song simply about friendship and it reached #1 on the pop charts and won song of the year at The Grammys. Also the fact that they’re all 15-20+ year veterans in the industry at the time of the song’s release. Dionne was 44, Gladys was 41, Elton was 38, and Stevie was 35 at the time this song was released. Then you add in the fact that they were all successful in their own right, and they came together and made a #1 song. Seems like nowadays, there would be too much ego involved to make something like this happen.
