I might be completely off base, but i remember reading that that's the reason why bugs were much bigger than they are now.
Yeah, the theory goes that cells could replicate at a much more efficient and healthy pace with amplified oxygen intake.

If that was indeed the case that there was more oxygen in prehistoric times. I don't know how scientists could prove that was true though.
