I’ve seen that same thing happen on another set but with a white director making a black actor’s character more nefarious than necessary.
Basically the guy was a drug addict that didn’t support his daughter. Idea was already established thru dialogue and general indications within the story (character hung out at neighborhood crackhouse, etc.)
BUT, this one instance while we was filming the director want some b roll of the character smoking crack.
Wasn’t in the script either
Andre wasn’t having it and let the director know straight up it wasn’t necessary for the character, which I agreed.
And, I feel Howard on the idea that the character becomes irredeemable if too much is literally shown.
That’s something directors gotta give good actors credit for; they’ve typically thought their characters out so if something is making their character look weird, it’s worth listening and asking yourself what exactly it is you’re asking for
