Crawford-Dulorme for WBO title at 140; Algieri gets next
Posted by: David P. Greisman on 2/27/2015

by David P. Greisman

The April 18 bout between lightweight champion Terence Crawford and junior-welterweight contender Thomas Dulorme will be for the vacant World Boxing Organization title at 140 pounds, according to a tweet from Jose R. Izquierdo II, the WBO’s general secretary.

The winner must face Chris Algieri next.

Algieri previously held the WBO belt after his June 2014 split decision win over Ruslan Provodnikov. He was forced to give it up when he moved to welterweight and challenged Manny Pacquiao for Pacquiao’s WBO title at 147 later in the year.

Crawford was the WBO titleholder at 135. He is coming off a decision win over Ray Beltran last November that moved him to 25-0 with 17 KOs. Dulorme topped Henry Lundy in December by split decision, moving to 22-1 with 14 KOs.

HBO will be airing a split-site broadcast that day, with a fight between Lucas Matthysse and Ruslan Provodnikov taking place in Verona, New York. No location had been announced yet for Crawford-Dulorme, though boxing writer Michael Woods tweeted Friday morning that it could wind up in the Dallas area in Arlington, Texas.

Then why are Matthysse and Provodnikov about to go to war? I thought they were fighting for the next mandatory spot :why:

They are fighting to move up in order to fight for Danny's WBC Championship

WBC: Matthysse is #2 and Prov is #5

Viktor Postol is #1 and the mandatory. If Danny is stripped or vacates (when he moves up to 147 after beating Peterson), Postol will have to fight the #2 Challenger for the Vacant Belt which will be either Lucas Matthysse if he beats Prov, or Adrien Broner (who is currently #4) after we beat John Molina and Dulorme wins/loses to Crawford.

If Matthysse loses to Prov, he's gonna drop of course, and Prov (and everyone else beneath Matthysse) will move up a spot

Thomas Dulorme is the current #3 Challenger, but because he's fighting Crawford he will be either removed (if he wins the WBO Championship by beating Crawford) from the rankings, or he will drop if he loses, and if Broner and Prov wins, he will drop beneath them.

You'd have interest if Al Haymon was attached to it. :stopitslime:

Crawford/Algieri is a good match up.

Still to be fair, it does rub me wrong a little bit about Algieri being in the mix. His fight with Prod was arguable, and he took a thorough azz whoopin from Manny, barrel rolls and all. Just like that, he's back in the mix for a belt. Something wrong with that picture. I guess that's what happens when a promoter and network keep everything in house.

Crawford vs Dulorme is a good matchup too. Good fight for Crawford to get his feet wet in the division against the #9 RING ranked Junior Welter:manny:

He could've fought a bum:yeshrug:

:obama: Agreed.

Arguable? :upsetfavre:

He clearly beat Ruslan. Hell aren't Lucas and Ruslan about to kill each other over a shot at Garcia's title. As far as Manny beating his ass :manny: nothing wrong with getting your ass whooped by the #3 p4p fighter breh and it was a catch weight that he never fought at before.

So he's just supposed to jump in 140 fight a top 3 fighter and take an L so you nikkas could be in here like "he should have fought a softer touch first" :beli:

Yeah, the problem with the picture is Algieri should've never been stripped of his WBO Junior Welterweight Championship in the 1st place for fighting Manny at Welterweight. That's the problem. Chris Algieri should STILL be WBO Champion to this day:manny:

You really think he beat Ruslan though convincingly? He ran that whole fight. Breh, there's such a fine line between boxing and running when the opponent is a brawler.

But with Manny though, yeah ain't nothing wrong with having him on your resume as handing you an L.
