Tell them they can be anything and stimulate their imaginations up until a certain age then hit them with the reality at like age 16 and make their ass learn a trade before going to school

I will allow my kid to make the decision at a young age of what they want to be and hold them to it, as long as it's feasible. What I mean by that is if my child tells me they want to be a doctor I will push them to do so, and I will not let up. I think (know…) that was my issue. I had so many aspirations and I never stuck with one thing. At least they will have a foundation for hard work and skills that are marketable. <<<hopefully.

I will not encourage any child of mine wanting to be a rapper, NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, etc. player. While they will be able to play sports these career options will not be encouraged. If it happens, it happens, but that's because they have the skill not because it is their only one. But I would be so disappointed if one of my kids wanted to be a rapper…:sadbron:

Why is this telling your children this a bad thing?

They can be anything they want if they follow the right path. If they want to be a lawyer, cool. Make sure your grades are top notch, go to a school that has a good law program, NETWORK while your in school, get your diploma, then apply for jobs & use those NETWORKS.

It's a mindset, If take the correct steps to accomplish a goal, I don't see why you can't be successful.

Tell your kids to take the Engineering Five.

Math
Science
Biology
Chemistry
Physics

Under no circumstances these courses are to be dropped, your kid should do fine in the modern world.
I would push English too. I know a lot of engineers and "smart" IT people who write like... pardon my French... fuggin retards.

This.

By no means am I saying that it's wrong for a kid to have big aspirations, but if your dream exists in the entertainment world, then you certainly need to be reminded and informed about what the chances of you flourishing really are, as it pertains to that industry.

Went to school with so many guys who are still chasing hoop dreams and trying to become the next Lil Wayne - and usually, they have no plan B or constant stream of income.

It's essential that you allow your child to dream big, but it's also essential that you make certain that they're aware that being a surgeon or dentist is a lot more plausible and realistic, and you'd be just as proud if they went that route.

I went to school for engineering but now I work in the Entertainment/Media industry.

Math and Science is good to know and useful, I wouldn't have never majored in anything else but you shouldn't plan a career in it unless is your passion. If you want to be an engineer just because of the pay cheque you're for a rude awakening. There are people who are just as passionate about science as the average person is passionate sports/entertainment and thats who you'll be competing with.

You'll get into medical school before you ever get into the industry or the NBA. Period. Following your passion is great, but kids need to realize the reality of the situation. I don't care if they don't major in sciences. I've been pursuing medicine for the last five years, so I understand fully how taxing and rigorous the steps are to becoming a doctor, but I'd much my child gain the skills necessary to succeed in that field or one similar rather than them banking on becoming the next Kanye West.

Whether or not they love science is ultimately irrelevant - you need an education and a plan B. Maybe that means you study physical therapy, or maybe that means you take up a trade, but you will have a fallback plan, and I refuse to cripple my kids by telling them anything different.

I don't think the point is so much that everybody is suited for every profession as it is telling your kid that you believe they can find their strengths and amount to something based on them if they put their mind to it.
