On the third day of my first work trip to Japan, the 9.1 magnitude earthquake hit 150 miles away from where I was. I was working on a ship docked to land, so the entire vessel tilted about 30 degrees. My coworker and I were confused at first...thinking maybe a crane fell onto the ship. Next a Japanese worker began yelling in Japanese over the loudspeaker. We had no clue what he was saying, but we knew some fukkery was afoot.

Someone then came in our workspace to tell us there was an earthquake and we had to immediately evacuate the ship. When we walked across the brow to exit the ship, an aftershock hit which made the structure jump as we ran across it. We had to walk ~1.5 miles to reach our hotel. As we speedwalked back, tsunami sirens blared...making that 30 min walk one of the scariest moments of my life. For all we knew, a tsunami was imminent and we were literally at the shore of a huge harbor. I remember looking for stairwells or any high ground. Once we made it to our hotel, we realized we weren't in any immediate danger from the tsunami.

The next few days were very surreal. Most of the subway lines weren't working because of power grid failures. Trains are a vital aspect of life in Japan, but the Japanese continued life as if nothing happened. They waited in hours long taxi lines without complaint. Since there wasn't any major earthquake damage or tsunami effects in our area, my coworker and I agreed to finish out the job.

About a week after the earthquake, nuclear radiation began to reach closer to my work site. There was a lot of rumors, incomplete info from the Japanese govt, etc so we were struggling to find out what the actual situation was in our area. My work site had an automatic nuclear radiation detection system that went off....at the point, my coworker and I we're like  we're coming the fukk home now. Because there weren't any trains running, we took a taxi from Yokosuka to Narita.....for $600+ USD. The whole situation didn't really hit me until I got back to LAX, going through passport control...and the customs officer saying, "Welcome home sir...I'm glad you made it home safely" :mjcry:

Back in the early 2000s I used to rap all the time... Like all the time. Everywhere I went I had my headphones on or a pen and paper and I was always writing or listening to beats, etc. I got pretty good too. What was crazy is that my parents supported me in this too :mjlol: like they legitimately wanted me to become a rapper. I started gaining some buzz around the city and actually did a few local features but no major projects or anything :whoa:. A friend of mine told me about this battle so I signed up :manny: I'd been to a few battles but never actually battled so I figured I would try it out

So, I slaughtered the first few dudes I went against :myman: Really embarrassing too. One dude wanted to fight it got so heated, and he kept flubbing his lines :dead: This was way before URL/Smack was big so it wasn't as aggressive. Mostly spit some writtens and maybe sprinkle in a few personals, but all to a beat. Like a mix of written and freestyling.

So I get to the finals and I see this corny looking white boy from a trailer park with an uncle tom ass sidekick and I'm thinking 'm bout to kill him :mjlol:. I already knew he still lived with his mom at 27 years old and was broke as fyck :deadmanny:

Outta nowhere this dude starts getting the whole crowd rockin :dahell: Even the fat booty chicks had their hands in the air. I was :dwillhuh::patrice::jbhmm::beli::mindblown: because this dude started talking about how I'm not a gangster and mentioned my high school and my real name and that I had good parents. I was like :damn: when the crowd was rocking with him. But I knew I had some good rebuttals in the tuck :myman: (I knew all about this dude from a few other shows I've seen him at)

dude starts dissing himself at the end of the battle :stopitslime: He was talking about how corny and poor he was and I had nothing to say. I was frozen brehs :sadcam:

Dude dropped the mic on my uptempos and left. :sadbron:

That was the last battle I was ever in :wow:

When I was 18 my family was about to go on a trip to Mexico. I was adamant about not going but the day they were leaving I got this feeling something wasn't right. It kept gnawing at me. So at the last minute I decided to go along. We get there and the feeling finally goes away.

With about a week to go my sister wanted to visit this resort town called Mazatlan. So her, I, my brother, two female cousins and my two nieces and a nephew go. We spent about 5 days there and everything was good. We leave in the morning and make it to Durango, from there it is about a 6 hour drive to the ranch my family lives at.

Here's where it gets hazy. I don't recall ever falling asleep but next thing I know I'm riding in an ambulance. We had crashed somehow. So I'm in the hospital and the cops are asking me who all was in the car. I assume everything is fine because had it not been why would they be asking. After awhile people from the family start showing up.

Finally my mother comes walking in with my aunt crying because she knows nothing yet. I tell her I'm ok but she asks what about everyone else. So they take her away I'm assuming to inform her about what happened. Next thing I hear is the most heart wrenching sound anyone could ever hear. It was a scream unlike I'd ever heard. Right away I knew it was bad. I tried getting up off the bed but the nurses wouldn't let me. Finally my other sister comes up to me and informs me that my sister, my 9 year old niece and 18 year old cousin had died.

My younger brother broke his shoulder and shattered his ankle, so bad they wanted to amputate but thankfully his foot was saved. My 1 year old nephew broke both his legs, my other cousin broke her pelvis. My other niece suffered cuts to her forehead, legs and arms. I suffered lacerations to my right arm, had the skin on my right shoulder torn up due to road rash. It was the most terrible experience I've had to go through.

Still to this day the scream my mother let out haunts me. I've yet to ever hear a sound that heartbreaking again.

September Fourth...

The phone rang; I didn't answer but I knew what was going to be said.

I would say I was frozen because I was numb; but that wouldn't be accurate. I mean, yes, my body was stoic, but my mind moved at light speed and raced through time.

Vivid images of my mother's smile and laugh, her southern charm mixed with her New York sharpness. The warm memories of waking up on Sunday mornings; smelling the vaseline and oil sheen, hearing the gospel songs playing on the radio and getting ready to go with my mother to church at Mt. Sinai on Ralph ave, remembering the feelings of excitement to see my cousins. The smells and tastes of her cooking that my wife worked effortlessly on mimicking. The ominous "well, y'all, this is my last bbq I'm ever going to plan" statement she made at the bbq, family reunion she organized in memory of her late son, my late brother who died and took a part of her heart with her the year before. And finally, the future plans my mother had to celebrate her grandson's - my son's - first day of Pre-K. "Call me as soon as y'all get home from dropping him off", her words I planned to honor.

And then, like that, my time machine brought me back to the now. I was back in my house, next to my wife as we arrived back at our house proud of our son's successful first day of school, "Grandma Luida is going to be so proud of you!" as he smiled at the entrance.

My phone rang. The caller ID displaying my father's name and remembering that when my mother went into the hospital, my father said, everything will be alright, I won't call unless it's serious.

I knew. I answered. I knew. I heard the deep breath and sigh.

I knew. "You're going to need to come down. Mommy just passed away. Just now. I'm sorry."

She held on just long enough to be present in this physical world for us to enjoy her grandson's drop off to school for the first time. Her last gift was to hold on long enough to allow us to smile as he bravely accomplished this new milestone.

Thank you, ma.

me and my breh from high school decided to catch up cause we ain't see each other in a hot minute.

I was bumping nothing but Drake at the time (him and Gucci was all I listened to from '09-10) and he was really into them XXL, rappers-rapper types.

so we decide to hit up a local hole in the wall spot in the town next over, catch up and talk to some girls

we blasting music all the way there, talking shyt, trying to holler at girls in they car etc young breh shyt

we pull up in the club and we lowkey the freshest ones there.

Then we see this one guy there, kinda awkward looking, and dressed bummy as hell. yellowish looking ones, pants that needed a little ironing and a shirt with a stretched out neck.

so we get to making a scene, doing the "head ass, looking ass" chit we do up here. we gunned the fukk outta homie in front of everybody, and his comebacks was trashed and we could tell breh was getting heated af, so he bounced

then we get to talking to these two girls that was there, baddies not from the area, my boy did the talking and i kinda eased my way into the convo and ended up getting the girl I peeped to laugh and really had fun talking to her.

so we get ready to go dancing and the breh from earlier we was heating tried to bum rush me away from shorty, I had to shove the breh out the way hit him with the :dahell: and he just staring at her looking straight :mjcry: going "oh for real?"

and we BOTH had to explain to breh just cause shorty danced on you (obviously out of pitty) don't really mean shyt like that...except for me and my mans :takedat: so buddy walks away shaking.

had a couple of drinks, exchanging numbers, facebook etc. they said they were bout to hit up a friends spot nearby and we should come thru.

me and my mans wait a bit after they leave , when we did that air hit us and was just feeling good and faded af.

we hop in my boys car and get to rolling us one, and we geeked cus lowkey these girls was a bit out of our league

but then my side of the door swings open and the breh who we made fun of earlier, punches the shyt out of me , I get out the car ready to throw hands but his buddy runs a bit in the middle of the parking lot, and he's with at least four of his guys with him.

So now me and my mans standing in this parking lot arguing back and forth calling him all kinds of bytches, lame, broke, fukkboy etc. and his little clique trying to get us to throw hands.

so buddy gets the biggest dude in his group to fight me and I say "you a straight bytch, you need another nikka to fight for you."

:snoop:then them nikkas just flat out charged us brehs

:pachaha:i got a few hits in but when I say they beat the breaks off of us boy, we managed to push them off of us, and they bounced, the lame nikka with the stretched out shirt was hollering ":damn:ON GD we just whooped them nikkas on GD!" which is funny cuz I was a GD but I cut all that shyt after high school.

so me and my mans in the car straight :scusthov::mjcry: and we start driving to the spot, we get there, hop out and as we walk up to the apartment building they was at my mans hit me with the "tell em we won." cuz we was had a few scrapes, torn shirts, busted lip etc.

and best believe later that night, after shorty talking my ears off about being a nurse, got all up in them guts.

I had a feeling... its like i felt funny from the time he died until the time i was actually told .. nobody had to tell me.. I knew... then as time went on and he didn't show up to pick up me and my siblings from grandmas house ..I knew... then when my mothers side of the family came to pick us up ... I knew... then when my aunt sat me done and told me .. I balled..
