Tekken has always been one of the more challenging games to play for me anyway. It's definitely not the game you can come into with no practice at all and have fun. They definitely make you work.

Word? I've always thought it was easy getting into Tekken but then again I've been with the series since Tekken 2.

Tekken: Easy to learn, hard to master
Street Fighter: Hard to learn, easy to master

Was the way I always saw it.

Why a Tekken 7 Character Is Being Called a Phoney

As for the clothes, I don't think it borrows from our traditional clothes, I think that's the reason why people are calling her "not Filipino enough".
A character named Josie who looks like she has cat ears and a tail...
Upon closer inspection, this is in fact supposed to be a kimona blouse, but way too skimpy-fied. Ok then, fair enough. Subtle, but I think it's Filipino enough.

This is Josie Rizal. The recently revealed character is Tekken's first Filipino character. For some, she's not Filipino enough—or rather, Filipino at all.
Josie Rizal is named after one of the country's most important national heroes José Rizal—something Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada confirmed.
Her outfit is red, blue, yellow, and white, which mirrors the colors of the country's flag. Josie Rizal's fighting style is eskrima and kickboxing. Eskrima is the Philippines' traditional martial arts. So what's the big deal?
There are fans who seem pleased, but others don't think Josie appeared Filipino in either the way she looks or dresses. Well-known Philippine-born artist and poet Adonis Durado summed those feelings best to the Gulf News, "The problem with Josie Rizal’s character is too obvious: it doesn’t have any trace of Filipino-ness-neither in her physical attributes nor in her outfit."
Continuing, Durado added, "If her fighting style is purportedly eskrima, where are the arnis sticks? So the Filipino-inspired name is simply a token."

Tekken: never the place to go for accurate ethnic representation.
So far, it doesn't seem like the character speaks Filipino or have a Filipino accent. As reported on the Gulf News, one fan hoped the character gets a Filipino dub and says things like "Aray!" (ouch) when fighting.
Filipino site GMA News reports that the country's National Commission for Culture and the Arts expressed dismay over the character.
Dr. Leodenito Cañete from the NCAA is quoted by GMA News (via Rouken at NeoGAF) as saying, "It's hard for us to prevent other countries from making characters like this because Philippines is very popular around the world."
The government body is considering looking into the matter to "correct" incorrect impressions Josie Rizal gives. Maybe it can do something about those deja vu attacks, too.

Supposedly the main issue is that "Josie Rizal is named after one of the country's most important national heroes José Rizal—something Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada confirmed."

Im trying to care but to anyone who has been a fighting game fan within the past 20 years we all know how the Japanese get down when "representing" other nationalities in their games

This game is going to have complaints about ethnicity popping up left and right as soon as it hits the states.

I liked the simpler designs of the fighters before Lars, although Yoshimitsu's been looking ridiculous in every game after T3. But you didn't saying anything because it's Yoshimitsu. Jin looks like shyt which is surprising since he's a main character. Looks like they combined Lars' suit and Jin's T4 hoodie. Just looks bad when Heihachi and Kazuya have the same looks.

And I definitely see a lot of Steve and Bruce animations in Josie, dat back lean is vintage Steve. The concept of them being one character is dope so she better stay in the game.

Tekken 7: Phil Gov't Agency Clarifies They Have Not Decided On Josie Rizal
The NCCA was forced to speak out after it was misreported that they disapproved of the new Tekken character.
cbvfk6usaa2tvx.jpg

A government agency in the Philippines has spoken out to clarify they have not condemned incoming Tekken 7 character Josie Rizal.
When Josie Rizal was first introduced, many Filipinos were happy to be represented in the game. However, many were also upset, feeling the character was a poor portrayal of Filipinos. Some were particulary unhappy that she took her name from one of the Philippines’ foremost heroes, Jose Rizal.
Josie Rizal’s design and creation were collaborated upon by Tekken head Katsuhiro Harada, character designer Mari Shimazaki, and Filipino and Madcatz global community and sponsorship manager Markman23. Josie’s name was intended as an ode to said hero.
A few days back, NCCA coordinator and educator Dr. Leodenito Cañete spoke out against the character, stating that he was looking for ways to correct the historical figure’s image. Unfortunately, this was misreported as the NCCA making a statement regarding the game and character.
The NCCA has now made an official statement stating that Cañete is not an official or a member of the NCCA’s commission. They are currently investigating the case and will issue a statement later, but have no official position as of this time.
Harada, for his part, explained why Josie was created. Although the Philippines represents a very small segment of the Tekken community, he wanted to make Josie as something special for them. Harada has visited the Philippines several times and felt the potential of their Tekken community.
Harada also states that if push came to shove, they can easily remove and / or replace Josie, thanks to Tekken 7’s network update system, which is present in all their arcade boards. Tekken 7 is still in location testing in the arcades, although it is expected to be released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
How do you feel about Josie Rizal in Tekken 7? Would you like to see her get a name change, a redesign, or be removed altogether? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.

I'm liking the Josie character. Gotta give props to Tekken as being one of few games out there that does a pretty decent job at putting out a plethora of diverse ethnicity/nationalities of characters and them not being super-stereotypical either. This probably the only game that has black characters that aren't only relegated to super strong, stupid style characters or just boxing for a fighting style. I also love that over the years, they've moreso incorporated each character speaking in their region's native tongues too, rather than just being strictly japanese or poor english versions.

Tekken actually does a pretty good job at it though. Definitely waaaay better than most games. I mean, look at other fighters for example.
