He was out performing his father in Calculus by 16, chances are he's a genius.
So don't feel to bad, you probably wouldn't have been able to do this at 16 regardless of when you learned calculus.

I learned some calc around 10 but my heart honestly isn't in school or stuff like this. I just do math as a pass time.

Props to the kid I hope he does wonderful things.

That said, Ray’s alleged solutions were “not endorsed by experts in the field who should have been involved in the evaluation of the work,” Voigt and Chill wrote in their published comments on the young man’s work. Furthermore, his steps were largely already known to experts.

Voigt said he did not know how the public was made to believe that a long-standing problem had been solved.

“The point is not that something is missing in Ray’s analysis, but rather that there was no ‘problem posed by Newton,’ and that the methods used by Ray are exceptional and remarkable for a high-school student, but standard for professional mathematicians,” Voigt said.

Genius remains to be seen. He is definitely a sharp trained mind. The whole idea that all kids should learn at the same basic level is a joke. Parents who teach their kids beyond what is normally considered childhood education almost always see great results. Don't limit learning based on age.
