California Experiences Major Migrant Shift

H-1B Visas
California Experiences Major Migrant Shift

Why It Matters
The rise of high-skilled immigrants, through the H-1B visa program, marks a major change in the workforce landscape. The trend reflects a broader national pattern in which skilled labor is increasingly coming from Asia, while fewer lower-skilled workers are migrating from Latin America.

And this other company hit me for an interview without putting the role I applied to in the email, like bruh, it’s 3 roles on your site and I can’t remember which one I applied to :dead:

How are you getting these jobs, u posting off linkedin or something else and what is ur occupation in the tech field
product marketing, mostly cold applications on corp sites or from job aggregators. have done some of the extra shyt like asking for referrals and sending emails/LinkedIn msgs to recruiters and hiring managers, but not really getting any traction from jumping through hoops, my cold apps have gotten better reponses. used an AI resume editor to update my resume and my hit rate went up, and using ChatGPT to answer filter questions on applications or write cover letters where required

How much do you all lie on your resumes? These are the jobs on my resume. It makes it look like I’m a job hopper. What should I do?

Job 1: April 2019 - March 2020 (acquired by big tech)

Job 2: March 2020 - March 2021 (same role as last job, but at as a 1 year contract at big tech)

Job 3: April 2021 - February 2022 (euro tech company, layoffs after they pulled out of the US)

Job 4: February 2022 - August 2022 (startup, mass layoffs after ceo left)

Job 5: November 2022 - February 2024 (startup, quit without backup)

Current job: Aug. 2024 - present (salary 30% less than last job, no room for growth)

Should I get extend Job 3’s dates and get rid of job 4 entirely?

Job hopping is better than having gaps in your resume. Older folks don't like job hoppers but HMs interviewing 30-40ish years old don't care as much.

Tech hiring collapsed. What signals are on the horizon?

In both 2022 and 2023, 1 in 4 of all US layoffs was in the tech industry, per an industry report. Last year, it was 1 in 5. Nevermind the crushing 2000-2001 dot com bubble or the 2008-2009 Great Recession. Dismally, each of the last three years would have been tech’s highest share of employment in modern history.

Nationally, the number of software developer jobs posted to career-site giant Indeed is still falling, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis — down 8.5% year over year in January, long after the steepest fall from the frothy swan song of the pandemic digital boom.

I’d consolidate roles 1 and 2 and roll with the big tech name, if the startup that was acquired had brand recognition, I’d pu that in parentheses next to the big tech company name, otherwise just role with the big name and put the correct info on the back ground check form
