Its not kosher, but you have to a
understand that the union is like a defense attorney for the employees. They know they're going to lose the case, but they have a duty to fight for their members under any circumstance. It's what they're paid to do. The union cant just deny you representation, then they can be sued.

On March 26, 2013 WB-RC officials offered a $10,000 buyout for any qualifying teacher who left the school district that year, an incentive superintendent Dan Cwayna said the district had used in the past to encourage needed staff reductions.

While its not clear when Erickson’s employment was terminated, the union’s action suggests he was still on the payroll when the buyout was offered and accepted it.

The school district declined to pay him the money, prompting the union’s action.

“You had to qualify for the buyout, depending on your years in the district,” Cwayna said. “We’ve done it in the past. It was a little different this last year in that we offered the buyout in two $5,000 payments.

“When the first payment was sent out … and the union discovered we did not make the payment to Mr. Erickson, they filed a grievance on his behalf.”
They aren't even defending his sexual misconduct.

Except for the letters they sent the court asking for a lenient sentence and defending the actual child molestation "he made a mistake"

Also... WTF is going on in this thread?
No you're right, but I said that in my first post. The union has to defend their guys. However, I think asking for a lighter sentence was above and beyond what their duties are. He mustve had a friend in the union. I do not condone that. They should have not gotten involved outside of the monetary dispute with the school board. Nobody should defend a convicted rapist, especially after they rape a retarded kid.
