Exactly. He can't say, "white supremacy let's me be successful." If he does, then one of the following statements by default must be true:
A. I'm a token who was given this position
B. White supremacy isn't all encompassing
C. None of what I've said is true since I'm allowed to denounce white supremacy, and become successful in the process.
D. I'm by default benefiting from white supremacy because I've become successful by speaking about something that white supremacist consider a cardinal sin, which is discussing and trying to end white supremacy.
E. I'm a fraud
F. ALL OF HE ABOVE.
Tariq's cognitive dissonance is rooted in his preconceived notation of how he thinks the world would look if WS didn't exist which is a world were sharp disparities between groups in human activity and outcomes wouldn't be found. This is how he is able to rationalize away success of certain black people, sub-groups of black people, or any sort of other facts that run contrary to his beliefs, because the overall racial group disparities still exist, and in his mind, disparities can only exist due to human intervention.
